Roofers are getting ridiculous... 8636 23
Started by Bobabooey
Where does it stop&160;
I am sick of dealing with roofers lately who have been in the business for less than 2 years.&160; They are taught by the owners of the roofing companies that any shingle that is not sealed down like it is brand new is wind damaged.&160; I am getting tired of the having the same damn argument all day long with these guys.&160; Most of these 22 year old 'salesmen/insurance fraud commiting crooks' have never even seen real wind or hail damage.
Just so you know roof...

standard duty of care by insurance contractors 8756 52
Started by Leland
What do you fellow adjusters think about contractors that advertise that they specialize in insurance but don't seem to know the basics of how it works and do economic harm to the insureds
My understanding of liability is that a professional has a 'standard duty of care' so for example, a professional who's supposed to know something about the business he is in can't get away with saying 'Not my fault, I didn't know any better' when things go wrong.
Two examples:
90 year old man has a fire. ...

shooting at rats claim scenario 2259 5
Started by Leland
The insured tried everything to get rid of the rats invading his home. He didn't want to use the poisonous bait, because he was afraid the rats would die inside the walls. He caught some with old fashioned rat traps, but the rats got smart and would trip the trap and then lick the peanut butter bait clean. They seemed to avoid the sticky traps even though he placed them carefully.
Finally in exasperation he got some kind of lower power rifle and waited up all night, sleeping outside the kitchen...

Well guys i fell off a roof the other day and am very lucky. I have completed my&160;inspection on a simple 6/12 pitch single story and was getting on to my ladder and as soon as i put my second foot on the ladder is slipped out from under me.
I was carelness in setting up ladder on asphalt that was probably newly sealed and still a little slick,( my fault).
&160;
Please be careful out there it only takes a few seconds to screw up and i don't care how experienced you are it can happen.

Underfunded Insurers in Florida 2481 3
Started by cowboy26995
According to several recent articles in Florida newspapers a multitude of insurers operating in the state of Florida are severely underfunded and would not survive the aftermath of even a Cat 2. This is really encouraging for those looking foreward to the upcoming Cat season. It will be very important for all of us to ascertain the viability of any carrier you choose to work for. Handling several hundred claims for free would not be very pleasant. Now not only do you have to cull vendors for som...

Roof too old to repair 19107 38

I&160;was having a discussion with another adjuster about this topic.

&160;
Hip roof about 19 sq.&160; 3 tab, age of shingle is 15 years. &160;Shingles are in typical condition for their age. &160;About 1/3 front and rear slopes have broken and missing tabs around the ridge and scattered across the slope.
&160;
I say roof cannot be repaired effectively and should be replaced.&160; Other adjuster says, repair because insured failed to maintain the roof.&160; He say...

Permits 2775 11
Started by dcmarlin
In my 20-something years, I can probably count all the times I have added&160;permits to an estimate on one foot and still have a little piggy or two left to go to the market or have some roast beef.
I agree it is a legit cost which will (should)&160;be incurred but feel, if you write a good estimate, there is plenty to cover this cost (whether or not O&P is applicable).&160; Never do I have an established&160;local GC or local roofer ever ask to add for permits.&160; It seems the only...

State Income Tax 4076 18
Started by dholman
Since tax time is here, I have a question concerning individual state income taxes. For years I worked for a major IA firm who paid by W-2 and&160;held out federal and state income taxes for the individual states where I would be working cats. So, I would end up filing state returns in several states each year and paying taxes&160; even though I was always a permanent resident of TX. And, as far as I know everyone else was doing the same thing. However, I am now working for a company that pays...

Possible contractor fraud-How to handle ethically? 6025 32
Started by Olegred
Well, can't say I run into those often, but it looks like I did today. It's one of the wind damage claims. I went up on the roof and after looking around and chatting with the contractor I started to think that a couple of things looked odd. First, there were missing tabs on front and back slopes, BUT they were all laying NEATLY exactly underneath from where they were missing in the gutter. Second thing that looked suspicious was that on the steep part of the roof there was no damage. All damage...

I have been assigned to do a supplemental claim, the insureds state that the third stall on the open face barn was destroyed.&160; Of course the debris has been cleaned up already as months have past since the storm.&160; The only thing that I could find was a 7' 4x4&160;in the ground.&160; There was no evidence of the third stall being attatched to the other two stalls, I am at a loss.&160; The original adjusters report done shortly after the storm only has a few photos of the barn and eve...

Cars surfing on mud waves 2154 5
Started by Leland
&91;script removed&93;
&160;
Five homes were tagged with a red notice warning they were unsafe to enter. At one house, mud was piled up to the handle on the front door and the yard was completely washed away, replaced with muck, rocks and a tangle of tree roots. Two white Toyotas were smashed up against front of house.
&160;
Now we know that flood is excluded under DP1 and HO3 policies. But both cover vehicles. Would you cover the building damage from where the car hit the building
