Are you working, if so daily or cat? And how long have you been lic. I think it will be a huge eye opener too many people how many people are not working. I had a friend recently that decided he wanted to be an adjuster. He signed up for a class with a guarantee we will help you find a job. Guess what 9 months later and he still is not working. The help they gave was a list of IA Firms with phone numbers. Please respond even if you are not working.

There is absolutely no doubt that the number of adjusters has far exceeded the need. There are no less than 7 schools in my area that have classes monthly or at least quarterly. all pump out 20-30 adjusters per class. All waiting for the next Katrina/Rita/Wilma year, that due to global warming is forecast to happen any year now. Just ask the schools, they will tell you so. Almost every week I talk to someone who was an adjuster in '05. Now they are driving trucks, wiping tables, selling cars, whatever they can find to do. I wish I knew how many new adjusters were created each year. I'll bet that on average no more than one from each class of 20-30 actually enter the field as adjusters. Even experience well established adjusters have trouble finding enough daily work to stay busy between storms. Companies do not want to rely on someone who may leave at the first hint of a storm. At any given time we can find a thread from someone wondering which school to go to. My suggestion is to get a roster of the last 2 classes, call each one and see if they are working. One school, Vale, is creating more adjusters each year than are actually needed in the field.
So back to the question, a few are working enough, a lot are working a little but not enough, more are just waiting, and most are wondering what happened to their savings and the promise of a call.

I am collecting $417.00 Unemployment Compensation each week to be a porch monkey. Had I known about this years ago, this 'filler' between the storms would have made a big difference in removing the worry factor.
Oh sure, each week I call all the usual suspects for storm work and each call counts for the job search as required by the state. So until Mother Nature womps it on some big city or region, this porch monkey gets to eat fried chicken for Sunday lunch.

Insurance adjusters. Thousands in the USA. Staff adjusters probably over 50,000. Local established IA firms probably over 3 times this many. Thats about 150,000 people with 1-20 years of training on all type claims. People who have worked a catastrophe loss or want to work a catastrophe loss about 200,000. Number of adjusters need in 12 months, year in and year out without an Andrew, 4 in 04, Katrina/Wilma. Gustov/Ike in 08 to work the dailey claims all the staff adjusters and 90% of all the IA,s or about 185,000 adjusters per year needed.
The top 5-10% of the people who have the reputaion of "leaving for a big storm" can find work on some level when no catastrophes are occuring, that means about 1/2 of all the people with adjuster license are not working. Some can get 1/2 doz. osses per month from a firm that does cat and regular claims, but the other 2 sources of income, these people are never considered. I leaned this 40 years ago when I came back from a staff job and wanted an IA job. Reason I was not hired.... "he will leave on the FIRST big storm" was the preception. |

Ray, that is an ageless truism. It also becomes a sword that cuts both ways. Since the carriers/local IA's believe that, it leaves those who seek to return to the security of the fold out in the cold, as it were, who then MUST bug-out when the wind blows because they have no other choice.

It seems the Texas License adjusters have really helped the carriers and vendors out of a real PR problem on a monster catastrophe situation. Call in a two thousand or so that can not work a claim and give them 30 each and thats 200,000 happy insured's contacted by their adjusters cell phone number and a promise to inspect inside 30 days. Two hundred thousand phones stop ringing. This wave falls short on performance and the "tag team" or second wave move in and so forth. That what the Moysten Law firm says on its TV add,s . Hmm I saw the same thing in Palm Beach County in 2004. |

A lot you guys are looking for outside work, try looking for inside work. I was told during my training if you can land a job working inside, I should take it. The only experience I had was selling roofs for 8 months. Since being inside I have learned a lot, which will help me when a Katrina does hit. In Aug 2008 I got my license. One month later I was working temp inside cat for large insurance company. I was there for 13months before they let me go. 3 weeks later I landed a temp inside cat job at a smaller insurance company. So for you new guys out there, dont try to swing for the fence, just try to get on base.

Just finishing what has been 2 years of branch assists (5 different assignments) and hoping for a couple of weeks off before they call again. If you have a good background in all lines claims there are opportunties out there.
I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Read an add today from a vendor thats wants adjusters in several western states with adjusting experience to work regular daily claims.This vendor ask the interested adjusters to send copies of some of their past adjusting files and no phone calls please.
This seems rather harsh if you only have a property & casualty license from an Texas Adjusters license mill, a three day xmate class, earthquake and several other coveted certification from the best schools. |

I am working cat wind claims in Phoenix, Az area. Been here for a couple of weeks just off the longest stretch without work in over ten years...Up to about 90 claims and thankful to be here.

I saw that too. The first thing I thought was - It would be illegal to send copies of my past adjusting files - unless I redacted everything and even then......

The files can be edited not to give away customers information. The black markers do not destroy the "thinking, logic, education, comprehensible skills needed to be a top cat. adjuster. I would not hire a lawyer, doctor, adjuster, engineer or pest control person with out seeing some past work proof. |

Amazing!!! The number of claims (dailey) I see advertized at Cado in the east/northeast and not a CAT assiigment out of any of it. Is any one out of the west traveling to work claims back there or do they have enough out of work adjusters to handle their losses out that way?
