Have you ever seen damage to the comp shingles of a roof related to ice dams...I never have in 25 yrs of doing this.  I have a claim though that the contractor says the damage to the roof is from the ice dam.

The damage is corners of the tabs broken off.  I have searched endless ly on google and Haag and found nothing .

     Has anyone ran across this?

Sounds like a roofer trying to make a buck.I had a guy(roof salesman) ask me the other day if I had any names(insureds) that he could have, I told him no, and even if I did, I wouldn't have.

I have never worked a Ice Dam claim however recall that one of the other adjusters, here on CADO, identified damage along the edge of the shingles where someone climbed up on the roof and used a snow shovel to clear snow off of the roof. Is it possible that the damage you are seeing is mechanical in nature such as described?

I've handled hundreds of ice dam claims and never found damage to the shingles from the ice.  I have, however, found damage to shingles from people removing ice and snow off of the roof...by using axes, shovels, etc.  The companies I worked for covered that damage...and they pursued subro when a contractor was hired to do the removal.

I Have to say, As a experienced roofer of twenty years, then a claims adjuster of ten years, handling ice claims at both sides..YES, certain roof slopes can experience damage to shingles.. when the gutters fill up with ice, and the thaw of the snow has no place to go, then freezes overnight, at times, will build up, as I have seen,, 2 inches of ice under the shingle, sure..after it thaw's,, they will lay back flat on the roof... but... if after, you go back and re-inspect,, there will be times that the ice lifted the shingles thru the nail heads causing damage to the lower 2-3ft. of shingles at the drip line,,,been there on both sides.. seen it..

The damage you describe does not sound like what the original poster is describing.
