Would be interesting to know what % of those adjusters that are registered here still consider themselves cat adjusters. (Roy, could CADO send of a blanket e-mail asking that question?)  I have notice that emails from vendors have slowing recently,  wonder how many have survived, and if we don't get a few hits soon how many will survive?

Yes it is possible to send an email to all that have registered, but sending over 10,000 emails at one time could send the spam cops after me. I will see what I can do.

Don't mean to muddy the waters...but if you are going to do this, it might be interesting to make it into a survey. For example, other questions might be "Is cat adjusting your primary source of income, or do you consider it a second job (i.e. are they retired from another profession or have a job/business other than cat adjusting)"...or "what is your source of income between storms". I'm sure there are wiser souls than I that could think of some profound questions.

Roy, this could also be a chance to find and eliminate dead e-mail address.

    AdjusterJ,

We did run a survey like that last year but I'm not sure where it is right now it may be in the old forum.  We also ran a survey in October of 2006 and one of the questions on the Survey at that time was "Is Adjusting your only job" and 64% of  people that  took part in the survey stated that it was their only job. The survey can be found on Archive page

stormcrow, I bet you are right, as I posted in another thread the membership almost double durning the period 9/2004 - 11/2005 and a lot of users that registered during that period did not return in 2007. I'm sure some found another place to go but I believe most of them left the industry or never found employment as an adjuster or in our industry and moved on.

I think that you will find that rosters are getting a little thinner, but there is still a few that came on board in 04-05 that are hanging on somehow. I have a friend that accepted an assignment in CO and he told me that a good majority of the Adjusters at the orientation had not deployed since Katrina. I found that hard to believe, but the info was credible. What I found even harder to believe was that these Individuals would quit whatever job had been sustaining them just for a few cat claims. Even if there was a major hit on the US this year, the majority would not be sent. But then again, the trend as I have witnessed it is to overstaff every event. I personally decided to stop deploying to cats and just concentrate on daily claims and private investigation (small kids and all...). Even without these reason, I see an industry that is undergoing a great deal of change and none in the favor of the cat adjuster. I use to enjoy my deployments, but it really just became a miserable experience.

    Pvt,

I've never seen the industry so unsettled. Change for the sake of change is the order of the day.

Major (top 3) carriers are changing how they handle claims on a daily basis and it seems to me to be a "knee-jerk" process at present. I think top management (the bean counters) are becoming very nervous and are trying every new idea that has any merit at all.

I recently wrote a fire estimate (as a contractor, not as an adjuster) and emailed it to the staffy adjuster as a courtesy, with the insured's permission. The staffy adjuster called and asked for a minor change to some cabinets, which I did right then and emailed the changed estimate to the adjuster.

She applied the deductible, no depreciation as there was a contractor on the claim and issued a check to the insured and lien holder.

If I had done this just a year ago when I was a staffy guy, I would have been given my walking papers.

    How things change.

    The only constant is "change".

The big 4 carriers in Texas are really rolling in the dough since Rita. Many have cut back to the HOA (named perils) which cost twice as much as a 1999 policy year.

An article in the Sunday paper in Houston was very enlighting. An retired Allstate Agent had open his Independant Agency in Houston and has 36 carriers who will write the broader HOB for less than the big boys and with lower deductible.

Hooray for the Big I carriers who do not require x-crap.

    Ray Hall,
I would like to know what companies are writing the HOB in Texas. I know Allstate does not Xactimate and can you tell me of the remaining twenty largest P&C insurers who does not use Xactimate. One of the companies I get assignments from was bought out by a company that is in 39 states now and requires Xactimate. I get claims from a company that is Texas only and requires Xactimate. I have never gone on hurricane assignments with any company that did not require Xactimate.

The newest version of Xactimate is improved with many of the forms that the other software companies have.
The only things I do not like about Xactimate are its higher cost and to have it installed on my desktop and notebook costs me double. I have been using Xctimate since I was a staff adjuster with Farmers Insurance over 13 years ago and I would like to see you refer to Xactimate as Xactimate instead of x-crap. Do you want or care if I refer to you estimating software as sim-crap, powercrap and Intigricrap?

Point taken Ranger. I work for about 20 insurance companies and non of them require me to use x-mate. I just do not maket the vendors/carriers that require x-mate.

    Ranger:

Here's a link for you to see who still writes an HOB - or a modified version - in Texas. I think AAA writes one as well.
