I review a lot of files and one thing that bugs me is some the First Reports I see.  I do see some good ones but sometimes I see a First Report that contains something along the following lines.  (This is short form report not a caption report.)

"Made contact with the insured and set appointment for inspection. Closing report to follow within three days of inspection."

    This report tells me nothing!

Would you send it to the client?

    Some questions.

    • Who did you speak with?
    • When is the inspection?
    • What kind damage is the insured reporting?
    • Do they have a contractor?

    And the list goes on.

What about the a phone scope?

Actually, Roy, it says all there is to say for the little that has been done by this adjuster.

Cat. adjusters have not been trained to write reports. Many have not been trained to keep ANY records of conversations. This is the files the attorneys for the plaintiff love and makes the fee,s better for the defense attorneys. I think Ike will change all this run and gun, estimate is in the mail.

this is my an edited version of my "cheat sheet" that I use to dictate my first reports. It helps me remember what captions I need like "salvage" and "subrogation" which go into every report. another example: if the carrier wants a recorded interview and I didn't do one (yet?) I will use a "recorded interview" caption to explain WHY I didn't do one (insured refused, wasn't home, lawyer will schedule etc etc)

Leland does this carrier write co-insurance on dwellings and contents. It must be some MGA with a London carrier as the fall back. In hurricane Ike a good bud of mine got stiffed for $40,000 in fee bills when the London Underwriter pulled out their backing. They call these non admitted carriers for a very good reason. I work for them also , but I will never have a back log of $40,K in fee,s . I think a few Florida carriers would go under in the first hour, but the adjusters would not find out until about 6 weeks in. The adjusters are the last to know, but the insureds will give you a clue. "Its been 3 weeks where is my check"    This is when you want to throw away your throw away phone time.

I had a got my first loss this week. Tree on the house from windstorm. Insured said it was a lightning claim, not windstorm. looked at her policy and it had a 2% ded for windstorm and a 1% ded. for all other perils. Never did see evidence of lightning, but saw evidence of a rotten live tree, worked up the new damage after I mailed her IKE settlement back to her for around 1K and statedI could not present about 4k and a double garage door twice. She got me chased off for being rude(asking hard questions). Live and learn they come and they go. I think I got a good one today, I have never figured out how to tell my principal my digital camera shots are not real as they do not show what my trained eye saw. or did I have a better eye when I was young, I still think its this new Olympus.
