i have been a general contractor for 39 years and  an adjuster for less than one. i wil admit through experience that i have sen a lot of adjusters , either not familiar with construction or just ingnorant. I do not believe that i have experienced "cheating adjusters" except during the 04-05 hurriane season in florida. that was bizarre to say the least. but on the other hand there are a lot of unscrulpulous contractors also. The unfortunat thing as I see it is that it is usually the innocent that usually are stuck in the middle. oh!, did I mention the most decietful of all--the homeowner. I found more of tem than either contractors or adjusters.

Most of the insureds I deal with are honest. I've had some understate the replacement value of their personal property (RCV endorsement) so badly I had to ignore them. When replacing window beading after a hurricane, one insured told me it was all from the sun. After comparing some fresh plastic with old dry plastic in the breaks, I got him to admit the hurricane didn't make it any better.

One insured met me at my vehicle with apology, "I meant to call you; I don't think I have enough damage to meet my deductible." She had a $250 deductible; her claim was over $40,000. That's not gold digging!

Maybe the guy with damage to the center part of his shingles more consistent with hammer than hail was less than a saint. There was another with with scores of concrete tiles glued back together with six different colors of adhesive, but even he admitted a "couple" of these had been patched prior to the storm...after I asked him.

I never met a dishonest insured. Some of them stretched the truth a little after we met, but on first contact they were all perfectly honest. Being from Texas, I see exaggeration more as optimism than dishonesty.

If it doesn't fit...adjust it.

Some people will try to make a buck, but most are honest. Regular property adjuster working accidental water and theft claims see a lot of "staged claims". Three water claims in two years will allow the carrier to cancel the policy under the Texas Insureds Bill of rights. Download this a good read.

Lots of widespread damage Sunday and after midnight from Arizona to Georgia. Just enough to give the local IA,s a week of overtime work.

If you have more than 10 years in property claims you may connect with some of the local IA,s for a week or two,s work. You will need a good resume, very good skills AND some closed files to submit to local IA.s in several states. They will call your reference,s, IF you get a call back. This also works on winter storms. Try to get a national directory of National Assoc. of Ind. Adj. directory. I have hired out of town adjusters in the past and been hired this way.Large carriers hired this way 30 years ago; but I think all use the vendor/contract system now.
