In a previous thread, (2 threads in 1 day - a record for me)  i posted about potentially working staff and how that would give me an opportunity to finish my educational goals.

Previous thoughts were "Geez, i wish i had stayed in school and got my MBA" because that seemed to be a good path for reasonably consistent money,  but now that i am entrenched in the insurance  adjusting profession ---- i don't know if thats a good fit or not.

I know you don't even have to have an undergrad. degree to be an effective storm manager for an independent firm, so i ask myself at times "Whats the point? - experience is king",  but are there advanced education progems out there that actually enhance your marketability in this profession instead of just being a couple of useless lines on a resume'?

    Doug,
    Just my 2 cents...

If you can live at the level of a lifestyle you are comfortable with (for the next few years) by taking the auto position, my advice would be to get your Masters. True, you do not need a Masters to be an adjuster or even a claims manager. However, if you plan on staying with a major carrier and taking that route until retirement (then jumping back on the fun side of adjusting - cat work), you will need the degree to get to the exectuive suite (and make the real money at the carrier level). Learn all you can about any facet of the insurance business. Get your CPCU (you can take a few of the 10 CPCU courses while going for your Masters) and I wish you the best.

The major carrier I worked with for 28 years preferred CPCU vs the masters first. In fact, many management positions required continuing insurance education with major designations such as CPCU for advancement consideration.

The great thing about this is that most major universities do give Masters level credit for CPCU courses based on the credit program established through www.aicpcu.org program so you are  accomplishing two major goals - credits towards your masters and obtaining your CPCU designation at one time!

Here is a link the college credit info with the Institute. Make sure to click on the ACE Recommendations which shows you the recommendations 100's of universities will use to give you the credit towards your degree:

The above is the link to the new info on the program. It has now changed to 11 parts and a partipant is required to complete 8 of the 11 parts with five of them being required then you can specialize in commercial or personal lines for the courses you take for the last 3 classes. I'll warn you- 540 is TOUGH..the Finance and Accounting part! I made A's in stats and accounting when doing my Bachelor's but it was still a killer in the CPCU program probably because it's nothing you can cram for since it is 100% formulas...volumes of them and you don't know which will be chosen for the exam. Ugh! I'm hoping it's easier with the changes to 540 in January as it will now concentrate on Insurance Finance and Accounting vs Business in General.

Thanks for the heads up on the CPCU -- it looks tough, but not being at a storm gives me plenty of time to study (hopefully)

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and good advice
