Hello, my name is Trever Portier. I am currently and owner of a general construction company located in Wichita, KS. I am interested in learning more about the process becoming an independent insurance adjuster. I am already quite familiar with the entire insurance process but more on the contractor side of things.

I have a couple specific questions about starting an actual company performing IA services across the states. I am curious, for those who are currently IA's traveling from state to state handling CAT claims, How are you incorporated? On a liability standpoint what is the best option on incorporating a company that performs such services? Also, do you hold insurance for such services?

I am trying to understand this as a whole before making any moves. Although I have plenty of experience on handling claims as a contractor I would like to better understand the side of handling claims as an adjuster.

Thanks in advance for any help you provide!

For handling personal lines claims you probably don't need insurance. Tax benefits of incorporation are overblown.

If you don't have claims experience, I would hesitate to stop doing whatever it is you are currently involved in until your first storm. Getting your feet off the ground is the hardest part.
