Hello all. I was licensed last year in Texas and went thru the AMCAT training program. Unfortunately, this economy has killed my current profession and I need another source of income. Obviously, I need some experience and after reading thru some of these posts, it seems a staff position might be the best avenue to pursue. Do you expereinced adjusters agree with this thinking? Can anyone recommend a few company's that might be hiring at this time? Did any of you experienced adjusters start this way? Thanks so much for your replies in advance!

Finally someone that knows the difference between advice and advise. I will recommend this one just for the proper use.
Mikey one thing that may make a difference in this post is: Where are you located? Are you willing to relocate?

Thanks for the referral Ray! If basic English is the standard, I should make a fine adjuster! :-) I'm currently located in Southwestern Colorado and Dallas Ft. Worth, and will relocate if needed. I don't expect any handouts, just trying to get my footing and was hoping to get some "advice" from you experienced guys. I've read quite a few posts and think I have a decent grasp of the business climate, I know it changes. Thanks again for the reply and any info would be helpful.

    Hi Mikey,

Personally I prefer independent adjusting, as these types of adjusters have the potential to earn MUCH MUCH more than a staff adjuster will.  However staff adjusting is a much more secure and consistent position (as these adjusters are paid on salary as opposed to per file or a flat daily rate).  Now is a good time to become involved with independent adjusting, as hurricane Sandy has created a lot of positions.  I worked in New Jersey last month and there will be LOTS OF CLEANUP WORK after the New York blitz of insurance claims.  I see you are located in Colorado.  Eberl Claim Services is an independent adjusting vendor that is located in the same state as you.  If you wish to get on their roster, you may apply online at www.eberls.com.  Eberl offers insurance carrier certification and holds a conference every year for independent insurance adjuster training.  The next conference is in February I believe, so now would be a great time for you to get started!

I hope this helps!  If you need further guidance there is a website you can visit that is solely dedicated to help assist individuals who are trying to educate themselves about the industry.  That site is www.insurance-adjuster-help.com

    MikeyB,

I agree EBERLS is a great company local to you. Most companies that take on Staff require a four year degree. If you do not have that then there will be an hurdle to get over.

    Good Luck !
Give them what they want, when they want it, and how they want it !

Mickey B...I agree with DStin214. Eberls is a great company in your state. One thing to consider about working staff, is do you have a 4 year degree? Most of the comapnaies require a college degree so this would be a hurddle to overcome.

    Good Luck with your journey!

Thanks for the replies. I am re-locating to the the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, hoping I'll have more options in a larger market. I do have a 4 year degree, maybe it will finally be good for something!

I worked staff for a year with Travelers. Amazing training experience. Horrible working experience. Got the training I needed then left for the "greener" hills of an IA. Only problem was that there wasn't any significant storms for a couple years. Worked with Pilot, did some fast track work for them. Did some this and that. Got called by my current IA firm for a temp job that has turned into a full time staff job the last two years.

Salary, benefits, PTO, storm pay, don't have to deal with the big corporate BS (just the small corporate bs), I'll be working when the temps go home.

I think starting out as a company adjuster is a great training tool. This way you learn the policy languauge and the way it's to be interpreted.Things are slow right now, so if you have the opportunity to work for a carrier jump on it. You never know you just might stick with the stability of constant paycheck. Then again you can always jump ship with some great training experience and laugh all the way to the bank when a big storm hits.
