Anyone know if Xactimate is compatable with Windows 8?

It is my understanding that Xactimate is not compatible with Windows 8. Pilot Catastrophe sent out a notice advising adjusters buying new equipment for Sandy to make sure they get Windows 7 on their computer.

I have a good friend that recently purchased a new laptop and decided to move his existing Xact subscription to it. The new laptop has Windows 8 installed, and it took the better part of a week for Xact technical support to get it working.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Windows 7 is utilitarian and functional for what we do. Windows 8 is like they tried to put a smartphone screen on your laptop. If you get one of the touch screen jobs, maybe it would be fun to use, but trying to (and having to) swipe the screens with a mouse to look for programs or documents loses you a lot of efficiency. There is probably a learning curve, and maybe I just didn't like the idea of having to learn an entirely new OS, but it really did seem geared toward the type of person that uses Twitter and YouTube as their primary tools, rather than a business owner who has to keep a stack of open files organized and easily accessible.

Works just fine now. Had a guy who bought a new laptop after he dropped his at the beginning of Sandy, and it was a mess. We had support on the phone for almost 6 hours, and he ended up having to alter code to make it compatible. Now, works just like it should.

There is a way to run older software on Windows 8, and I have successfully used this to run Xactimate.

    Here are the steps:
    1. Go to the 'Control Panel'
    2. Select 'Programs'
    3. Under 'Programs and Features' select ' Run programs made for previous versions of Windows'. Click 'Next' on the pop-up.
    4. Select the program you are attempting to use from the list.
    5. Select 'Try recommended settings'

There may be another menu or confirmation after this, but since it is working on my machine at this time...I am not inclined to click through and risk unnecessary changes.

The only side effect of this is that when I run Xactimate, I get a Windows pop-up alert asking if I want to allow the program from the unknown publisher to run. Select yes and all is well.

No guarantees or warranties offered with this...it works for me, and saved me a phone call with support.
