Well it has been a few years since I visirted this site and even longer since I posted. It has been interesting  to read some of the threads and it seems that the more things change the more they seem to stay the same.

I have a question regarding fee schedules at a flat rate. Between Cat events I work some daily claims for a few companies. I am based out of Paducah,Ky and it seems most of my volume comes from Nashville,Tn. with most of the claims being commercial. My commercial claims are on a T&E schedule and with mileage the trip to music city is usually a chance to earn some decent money.

I started running some daily caims about a year ago in some sparsely populated aras in West. Tennesee for a vendor that pays a flat fee schedule. My first thought on working for a flat fee schedule was not pleasant. However the claims are residential and are through Xacnet so it does cut down on the documenatation and admin. work. Another advantage is that the vendor is a dynamite company with great in houe support and they really care about there adjusters and strive to make my job as painless as possible. The downside is the flat fee schedule especially when the volume is light and to factor in drivetime usually over 150 miles roundtrip the money is just not there.

I am thankful for the work as daily claims  helps to keep food on the table between Cat events but was just wondering about the future of the industry as far as where we are headed with our fee schedules. Are you other guys and gals encountering companies going toward a flat fee schedule?

There are only a couple of companies that I know of that enforce a flat fee schedule, and my experience with them has been pleasant. Generally the flat fee schedule carriers have enough of a market share that landing their business with a flat fee arrangement makes it well worth it, simply because quantity has a quality of it's own. The only adjusters, both those that work for our firm and others that I know professionally and socially, that I have observed display any sort of negative feeling toward a flat fee schedule are those that reside in rural areas, and end up driving 150 miles round trip for a single claim. You do get ot pick where you choose to reside, however, and those problems are self inflicted.

In the world of daily adjusting, population density is key. While the vast majority of us dream of running hard and getting that nice little spread 45 minutes from the nearest speed trap, unable to see the neighbors, etc., the ones who achieve that rapidly realize that while it is nice and desirable (and quiet), there are very few insured's out there, which for the most part eliminates most, if not all your potential daily work (with the exception of farm claims). While Paducah is strategic to Nashville and St. Louis, it is not exactly a major population center, and I could see where a flat rate fee schedule would be unappealing to someone who had to make the drive on a daily basis.
