J I am confused why a teacher would tell you not to list your past experience .?? Especially if it has to do w/ the field you are pursuing.
I have over 12 years in insurance sales as well as 11+ years as an adjuster. Don't you think a past ins. agent w/ my experience would know contract law better than a newbie? I cannot think of how it would be a hindrance to the adjusting business. Plus it should demonstrate to the carrier that I have people experience in my past. I was also raised in a body shop working for my father would that be a hindrance over 10 years body shop experience from repair to frame rack experience.
I suggest you go to profiles of different experienced adjusters here on this site and read their resumes. These are the resumes of some heavy hitters in the business.
remember to follow your heart if it smells funny it usually is. You need to dig for the real answers. If this person knows so much about insurance adjusting why are they teaching classes.??? A good auto adjuster can keep busy when us property & Cas. adjusters are twiddling our thumbs.
As for pursuing the Pilot class. There may be many reasons it was canceled. They may have had a sizeable cat take place. Remember Pilot's storm supervisors are also your class teachers. They are usually the best of the best. Keep punching but don't quit your day job just yet.

I agree with Jerry. I am a newbie, never been on a storm, but my resume listing 18 years of construction (residential), 40+ years of management/supervision, 10 years sales/consulting is what got me on the roster for 3 of the big 5. It is also what got me invited to the SF Cert by 2 of them and the in house profile and review by one of the others. Discount what the instructor told you, a resume is where you show what you can bring to the job to apply to the skill set needed.

        Hey Josh,

Only you can decide whether this is worth pursuing, however Pilot is one of the Big4 of IA firms and one of the most reputable and respected firms in the industry.

Your teacher was correct about prior history (mostly) I will explain.I am a daily claims manager for an IA firm back East and I look at resumes everyday  and I run a site for new adjusters and I have a resume tutorial group and in that group , we tell new adjusters that IA firms do NOT care about your prior work history unless it is from a relevant industry nthat you can transfer skills into adjusting (IE Roofer, restoration, Auto body, estimator etc....) If you were a car salesman or worked in a warehouse, drove a truck, vacuum salesman, DO NOT include it, it isn't relevant.  Also do NOT put down something like you are an incendiary beverage coordinator when you really mean you get coffee for your boss etc.....
At the top of your resume in the first paragraph , we wanna know what states your licensed in, any certifications and  next paragraph any relavant work history if any....

You can then post when and where you received any relevant training (IE schools, XM8 training)

If you write a book and write lengthy job descriptions unrelated to adjusting, it will get tossed.

        Hang in there

        "incendiary beverage coordinator"

Please tell me someone actually used this on a resume you read over!  That's great!  =)  I'll have to add it to mine.
