Looking at 27 demo. interior macros auto populate qty, but roof macros do not. Cant find a preference page to address it. Can roof macros auto populate qty like interior rooms do?

In the 27 I'm using my roof macros do auto populate the qty, are you using the variables in the macros and retrieving into a dimensioned area?

I don't think a roof macro can auto populate the quantity. The roof macros I use have an arbitrary amount set in the quantity field, and then I change the arbitrary amount to the actual amount. I do the actual calculations on a separate piece of paper, and then transfer those figures to the estimate.

    Joeblack, they do auto populate.

    Test it in your Xactimate.

Create a simple roof macro, for example two lines, remove and replace RFG 240, the quantity field put the variable "SQ"

Next go to sketch and create the roof,

Then in the Estimate Items retrieve the macro you created into the roof area.

Note: I do not recommend creating macros using arbitrary amounts, this can cause problems, I see a lot of estimates where the adjuster forgets to update the amounts or maybe does not update all of the amounts.

For example if you are working hail claims you might wish to create a macro like the one below. The key is the variables and formulas.

    Cat     Sel           Calc
    RFG    ARMVN    Variable - SQ
    RFG    Felt15      Variable - SQ
RFG     240S       Variable - RUP(SQ*1.10*3)/3  (Includes 10% waste and rounds to the bundle)
    RFG     FLCH          1
    RFG     Drip          Variable - P
    RFG     VMTL         1
    RFG   VENTR         Variable - R

This is just me, but it seems all the line items on a simple roof could be 2 lines. Take off xx sqs, replace xx sqs with xxx @. No mention of anything else, UNLESS its not something that should be included.

If 2 or more people check each file for accuracy and it takes 20 min. each this is 40 min. per file that has to paid in wages. We should all agree with the roofers and it was understood years ago, that a first class job included what was need to make it a first class job. You did not need to list EVER item in a FIRST ClASS JOB. Lets treat comp roofs like a Dr. does vital signs. His nurse or someone does, and we can ASSUME all insurance restoration is first class.

I really think some programs are designed by water suckers, or even PA,s are worse street adjusters to "nudge the bottom line". No we all know that does not go on.

The old way is not always the best way. But this discussion is about macros and I don't want to get to far off topic.

    Roy,

You are correct. The quantity will auto populate if you go through sketch. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have never done it, but I understand that you can download a roof report into Xactimate from EagleView or other similar satellite measuring systems, and it will copy all the quantities into Xactimate automatically, just as if you, the adjuster, entered it.

I have seen several EagleView reports, and I have used their measurements to enter the quantities into Xactimate by using my macro with arbitrary amounts. Hopefully, I remember to change the arbitrary amounts to the actual amounts.

Ah, the old days. How about just one line on a roof estimate: R&R xx squares, with a price which included valleys, felt, additional layers, additional storys, pipe boots, etc, etc. I don't know any carrier that would accept one line or even two lines nowadays. Now its a separate line item for every operation: remove actual squares, replace squares including waste, replace felt, add for layers or height, and be sure to separate the remove price and the replace price for layers and height.

To me, this way "nudges the bottom line" alright, but nudges it downward, not upward. I say this way was invented by the accountants at the carriers to drive the price down.

Thank you for all the replies. The variables solved almost all my issues. Been a while for me. I must say 27 is really nice. Boy o Boy, out of the buis for 3 years and lots has changed, lol. thanks again all.
