    Hi,

I am getting ready to buy a unit for guiding me to claims daily. What do you folks feel is the best one for our work.

Some people have said TOM-TOMS. Some have said they have trouble with them. What is the general consensus.

       i use xactimate.

I use DeLorme running on a dedicated net book.

I have used both Tom Tom, Nuvi and one I got several years ago with Co-pilot. I rate them Nuvi, Co-pilot and then Tom Tom. I tried a Delorme back in '05 and at that time it would not find the Rural east Texas addresses that I needed to find and I returned it the next day.

Get a garmin nuvi (any brand is better than none) and make sure you update it on your computer. Then get an aftermarket portable mount for the dash board. It looks like 8 or 9 inch circle and your mount, mounts to it instead of your windshield. That way when you exit the vehicle, you set it on the floor out of site. I also prefer the "man" voice since to me it is more palatable and I can hear it better. Plus if your wife calls while you are driving she won't think you have a woman in the car with you. If you are a woman you might consider keeping the female voice for the same reason. It will also help you find food, gas and restrooms when you need them.

My wife goes with me a lot and resisted it until she experienced using it and now, "We don't leave town without it". It will literally save you in time and from distractions when trying to get to an appointment.

In the past I used the Delorme on my laptop, with a Jeniko desk. I liked the big full size screen. Last season I purchased a Tom-Tom and have decided I like it better. I'm not real sure the shaking while driving is good for my laptop, and Ive replaced the screen due to the back light going out twice. I tried a cheap one that didn't work half the time, returned it and got a Tom Tom. I still use the Delorme to plan my route but use the Tom Tom now while driving.

I use a Magellion, but I think the Garmin is better and the man is easy to hear.

I use a Garmin, did a recent update, and I use Streets and Trips for mapping stops.

Do you all download your addresses to a card then plug it into the Garmin . I didn't know till today that you have to download each address into the tom tom manually. Also do you run the quickest way mode to get to next stop.??

can you download directly from xactimate or do you download the addresses onto card then install card into Garmin???

Takes all of 15 seconds to put in an address in Tom Tom. If you do eight in a day, thats 2 minutes out of your day.

The GPS is not a mapping program. You get your claims, then if you are using Xact and have DeLorme you download all the addressess to the map. Now you see where all your claims are and can start prioritizing, setting appts etc.

Now when you start out that first claims morning, you generally know about where the appts are, but it's a strange town and there's lots of traffic and you want to be there on time. So, you punch in the first address and bingo, the GPS device tells you which way to go, when to turn and in what direction all the way to the place. No grabbing paper maps while trying to avoid traffic etc., no looking at the compurter map to see which way to turn.

When you are the interstate in a large town and have to negotiate large interchanges in heavy traffic, the GPS will save you.

The best thing to do is use 2 systems. Delorme is good for a notebook in the truck to show an overview and one of the small 'stick em to the windshield' types is good to have also. In a cat, one road may be blocked and you have to go around and the GPS doesn't understand why you cant drive over the tree or through the flood. Make sure you understand how to make the gps handle this error before you go. Also, watch you settings, shortest, quickest and preferred can put you in bad places if you are not careful. Good Luck.

Do you all take your units in each nite to avoid being stolen?
