Anyone familiar with glazing bead enough to answer the following?  I have a home with several windows that have damaged PVC glazing bead.  The window contractor states that the windows are no longer manufactured and wants to replace $12K worth of windows.  No other damages are present to the glass, the frames, etc.  I have found numerous websites that offer snap in glazing bead and do not feel that the windows warrant replacement but the carrier would like me to handle investigating the issue.

Any advice?  I know the carrier does not want me to automatically replace all of the windows.

    Thanks!

    Dave,

I could be wrong but, to the best of my knowledge, replacing just the bead should not be a problem.  I really do not see why you would need to replace the entire window.  Since you are here in CO, if you need names of good contractors and/or window people, feel free to contact me.

Gimme a bottle of anything and a glazed donut ... to go! (DLR)

If you contact the manufacturer of the snap in glazing bead they may refer you to a local contractor that has experience installing their product. That contractor might be able to give you good advice.

One time I had a wood grained aluminum patio cover damaged by wind. The manufacturer gave me the name of his favorite installer in the area, and that expert contractor was able to make a bid far lower that the insureds contractor.

A contractor who installs a particular item over and over will often have a lower price that a contractor chosen by the insured out of the phone book.

The window flexes with the wind and this does not constitute damage caused be wind. Damage is when debris hits the window and caused a break or denting in the frame near the glazing which can be claimed as damage. Simple glazing malfunction is the cause of wear and tear and is expected after 5-10 years of life. That is the reason window warranties do not exceed past this time period.

BTW - after the government gave me my converter box voucher, my ADD was upgraded to ADHD. The picture is great.

scott, you make a good point for (some?) wind claims but this thread was started under the Hail section. maybe some hail broke the inserts. Mr. Descher never told us what the cause of loss was.

I get vinyl windows damaged by exposure (next door) fires, so actually that's what I was thinking when I answered.

You can buy glazing strips and cut to fit. They are simple to remove and to replace. They are only good for about 10 years when they are in direct sunlight and glass flex does affect their longevity.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

What would a reasonable person do if their kid put a baseball through the window, and the "window repair guy from the yellow pages" says he can replace the broken dual-pane glass per site-measurements for less than their $500 deductible?

Even if the "entire window assembly" WAS discontinued, windows are pretty much designed to have access to the the glass in the event of breakage.

In the old wood windows with single pane glass, there was glazing putty to yank. Modern dual pane windows have other systems such as the plastic glazing bead. The glass industry has known since the 1980's that dual glaze windows will eventually "fog" and need to be replaced (especially the early - econo ones with polybutylene sealant).

It's like a slightly damaged roof, you find a vendor willing to do a repair if it is repairable. When you talk to a salesman that only wants to sell a complete roof (or replace all windows to the house) they are not an objective source of info. They have a different agenda - its not wrong or criminal, just different than the unbiased answer we seek.

    Hi Todd!
After your guidance in Atlanta I was fortunate to work north of Detroit for quite a while.

I got back home recently, renewed my Xm8 subscription and doing some overflow claims for a local staff guy in California to keep from getting rusty.  Use it or lose it...
