My family (Dad, brothers, sister) has been cat adjusting since 2003 working with mostly one vendor. Prior to that we were on the agent side of things. We are interested in slowing down on the traveling part and starting a local adjusting company in southern VA.  We are just tossing this idea around since there are few local adjusting companies in our rural area. I am in need of advice as to how to analize this decision and steps to take to get started.

One or more should learn how to write a sheet on auto collision damage. Talk to all the agents in 150 miles and ask them how the regular claims are handled in their area. If some old established IA has most of the business try to purchase the business on a buy out basis. A dead start up is not that difficult, but you will need about 50 to 60 claims of all types per month to make a living.
