I write this with a tear in my eyes. Dave Hood is one of my best friends. He is two years older than I and I am almost 70. Janice and I have known Dave since the big ice storm in Montreal in 1998. I have talked to him on the phone prior to meeting him, so I have know him and of him for many years. He is, (I just can't say was) a beautiful and generous person and has been through many hard times in this industry of ours. He is extremely knowledgeable of construction and construction techniques. We shared information for many years. He called me for coverage issues as I know more about policy information than did he, but then I called him on unusual construction problems and the man always was ready to answer me. He always kidded me that we should get married cause we were the perfect couple for trading knowledge. I will miss that laugh, very much.
Like me, he was always willing to help a newbie with their problems. I will miss him very much, as will Janice. Rest now, my friend.

Janice called and talked to Darlene, Dave's wife. According to her, there will be a private immediate family only memorial service this coming Friday night. In late September, they plan to take a sailboat out, which was something Dave really enjoyed, and drop bottles with messages to celebrate Dave’s life.
She also said she wished some of Dave’s friends would call, so I have shown the home number above. She also asked that the family be kept in your prayers.
Darlene said that Dave had asked that if anything happened to him and if anyone wanted to make donations, to do so in his name to: American’s Feeding Americans, Emergency Caravan, which is part of the “Feed the Children Program”. They are based in Oklahoma City, Ok. And can be contacted on line at,

I am so saddened to hear this news. He was such a great man and to have known him is an honor. I sat down with him back in March and will remember our conversation fondly… will also never forget walking Bourbon Street with him at night several years ago. He had such a great and engaging spirit about him and I learned a lot from him. He will be missed. This is a great loss for the adjusting field, to say the least.

I am so saddened to learn of Daves passing. He was such a great source of knowledge and a wonderful friend. I would periodically get calls and emails from him letting me know what he was up to in this business. I was always pleasantly surprised when I would get a call from him. I will miss him dearly and think of him often. Take your well deserved rest my friend. God Bless You and Your Family. |

My Dear Friend, May you rest now. You worked so hard, for so long. You helped so many and gave so much. I will miss you and will cry for a long time because my dear friend has went away.
My prayers are with Darlene and the kids at this time. He will always be a great man to his friends and his memory will live with each one of us.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dave's passing, he will be greatly missed. He was one of the great ones.

Dave was a great friend and I will miss him. He was a great man with integrity and he was always more than willing to help with anything he could. I always enjoyed our chats, it was just amazing to listen to him and hear his experiences. God bless; we will miss you. JR Parks

I had been independent for only a year when I got a phone call one day while working on branch assist in Fairfax, VA. It was Dave Hood telling me he was also in Fairfax and that he would like to meet me and have dinner with me. I saw him again at the CADO convention in 2001. After that I called Dave regularly whenever I had construction questions. He was one of my infallible sources when I encountered building features that stumped me. He could always identify the item and usually had a price for it right on the tip of his brain. Sometimes I called him just to see how he was doing, as well. When I called Dave in early 2004 he told me he had retired. But when Hurricane season came around again, he was chasing the storms once more. He was the kind of guy who had catadjusting in his blood. I join the rest of you in mourning his loss. The industry won't be the same without him.

Dave and I became friends back in 1992 during Hurricane Andrew. Dave was a tireless advocate for the best of our industry. We laughed, we cried, we partied, we sat together in church. Dave was much more than a friend, he was a brother. His heart was gold. Words can not describe the feelings of loss. Pray for Darlene and his kids.

Dave took me under his wing in 2004 and never let me fall. I would not be as successful in this business if not for him. We will all miss him dearly. He is a wonderful man that words cannot express. His heart, integrity and passion for the industry will never be forgotten.

I was a file examiner for MWUA after Katrina. I looked at several of Dave's million dollar commercial files. After looking at 3 or 4 of them all I needed to do is see that it was one of Dave's files and sign off on it for payment, no questioned asked. He put together one of the best files I have ever seen and I let him know that and reminded him of that just a few months ago. Rest in peace Dave, the industry and the world has lost a leader.

Richard D. Hood, 71, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown Pa. Born in Newark, Mr. Hood spent most of his adult life in the Asbury Park area and had lived in Upper Makefield Township for the past 30 years. He was a self-employed insurance adjuster.
Son of the late Thomas and Virginia Robinson Hood, he is survived by his wife, Darlene A. Hood; two sons, Daniel and Richard Hood; one daughter, Joyce Mazzella; two stepchildren, Sherri and Jeff; two brothers, Thomas Hood and William Hood; and five grandchildren.

What an absolute shock when I learned of Dave passing. I had been in email contact with Dave for years, however had not heard from him since mid July. I had only met Dave several times while working in the Virginia Beach area in late 1996 but we stayed in contact over the years and quite a bit in the past two years. Dave was always an inquisitive and very intelligent individual who had a wonderful sense of humor and love of life.
Dave also had a great love for his country and was a patriot of the highest degree and made absolutely sure that those around him understood his love of country. Actually, we had very few conversations about the "nuts and bolts" of adjusting as it almost appeared he relished the freedom of retirement. He did however, have much to say regarding the current trends, good and bad of the adjusting industry.
Dave will be sorely missed and the adjusting industry has lost a wonderful, caring man who was a friend to all.

I am, perhaps, the last adjuster that Dave ever trained.
I worked with him during Hurricane Ike, and I was his ladder toter, and roof climber. I volunteered to train with him, because I could tell that he was in no condition to be climbing roofs, nor carrying around heavy objects. He was not sick by any means, but I thought that his experience was better served by having someone help. Also, I got the benefit of learning the ropes of the trade. It was a good trade, in my opinion.
I did not know him previously, but I had been told that he was one of the best in the business. After hearing this, I set my mind to 'glean' mode, and did my darndest to learn everything he had to teach. He taught me the nuts and bolts of how to scope, as well as how to write up a claim, and how to do it correctly, as he would say . He was on the phone constantly. Many of your names I recognize from hearing him speak of you all. We did cross swords on a couple of issues, but our relationship was the better for it.
All in all, I'm glad that I got to spend time with him on his last storm. He was kind, gentle, intelligent, dynamic, and aware. He amazed me with his knowledge of electronic gadgetry. I did NOT expect that out of a 71 year old man. His memory was amazing as well. Things that I said in passing on the first day that we met, he brought up months later... that pretty much blew my mind. I think I will miss his storytelling ability the most. God, that man could TELL a story.
He truly was a renaissance man, and worthy of all of your praise and kind words.
I, for one, will miss him, and I thank God for the honor of having him invest in me.

Dave truly was a stalwart in the catastrophe adjusting world. Far too few exist that trace their roots to the hey-day of the catastrophe adjusting business as Dave did. The strength of his character and integrity should stand as an example to those "newbies" who want to have someone to emulate in this business... but more importantly ... in life itself.
