Think we will have a Hurricane make US landfall this year?
    Yes (7)
     58%
    No (5)
     42%

So far we have not had any hurricanes, the media is stating that the 2013 season could set a new record for the latest season to have a hurricane form.   In recent history the latest first hurricane to form was Gustav in 2002 which became a hurricane on 9/11/2002.

Another very strange season. But just feeling, but something will happen.

I voted no, but hope your 'feeling' has merit.

I just took the summer off assuming that we would have a so-so season.  It only takes one big storm to get things going.

Nah, it's not. Just last year, a $65,000,000,000.00 hurricane struck on 10/29, and it was not recognized even as a tropical wave until 10/22.

We also had a few less notable hurricanes in the late seasons the last few years:

    2012 Rafael (10/15, 90 mph winds)

    2011 Rina (10/24, 115 mph winds)

    2010 Otto (10/08, 85 mph winds)

    2010 Paula (10/12, 105 mph winds)

    2010 Richard (10/24, 100 mph winds)

    2010 Shary (10/30, 75 mph winds)

Many of us remember Wilma. Karen may not be to much, may get a few adjusters working. Looks like a weak cane or strong TS into the pan handle (at this moment).
Expect a couple more stroms this month.

I really don't mind a "weak cane". Sandy & Irene were both relatively recent category 1 hurricanes, and both made the top 10 most expensive hurricanes on record list. I know of over 200 people still deployed and picking up work from Sandy, a year later.

I try to not get too optimistic until the wind actually blows, but Chuck calling the season as "over" while we still have a quarter to go (famous words, I might add) seems a bit brash.

    Total and Average Number of
    Tropical Storms by Month (1851–2011)
    Month Total Average
    January— April 5 <0.05
    May 18 0.1
    June 82 0.5
    July 114 0.7
    August 362 2.3
    September 555 3.5
    October 323 2.0
    November 87 0.5
    December 16 0.1

As you can see by the attached chart, October is almost as busy a time as August.

Karen at this time is barely hanging on as a naked swirl, almost destroyed by shear and dry air. But she is trying to refire some sotrms. She may survive as a TS to make landfall on the gulf coast. Likely minimal storm minumal damage.

Over the last few years not so much as the peak intensity, but more organized weather systems seem to be moving ever closer to the latter time frames of hurricane season. We had Ida back in MID-November 2009, Sandy in late October, Karen now in October. If I remember correctly we had Wilma in October of 2005 and Tropical Storm Zeta December 2005.

I went surfing at Pensacola Beach during the worst Karen had to put out. She made for some chunky waves, but good surf for these parts.  Nothing claims-worthy will come out of this unless you live close enough to take care of the leaky roofs absent wind damage.

In reference to the earlier post about Irene and Sandy being late season low category storms. While these two were low category compared to their damage costs, they impacted expensive property with very high pop. density.

I love the point about comparing the number of storms between August and October; almost the same.

2014 is going to have all sorts of land falling canes.
Well at least you have to feel like it should have.
