Beautiful animal. You can tell your son I am jealous of him just for being there while it was taken. One of these days I will go and get one for myself.

The shot placement is very important when hunting Elk & Deer. This elk walked and laid down approximately 80 yards from where it was shot.

All ethical hunters will not take a shot unless you can put your shot right where it needs to go.

As you will notice this was shot right behind the front shoulder. That is where you want your target to be. if you go further back than this you may hit

the entrails then you have real problems an animal of this size can travel for days if hit in the stomach area.

If you hit higher by the back bone, that is an effective area  because the major arteries run along the lower edge of the backbone.

i hit a White tail deer one time right in the backbone and it instantly fell right where I hit it.

the newer compound bows have enough power to actually break a vertabrae if hit correctly and will drop an animal in its tracks.

My boys & I hunt as humanely as possible to eliminate any more shock to  the animal than is necessary. A quick kill is top priority in our book.

Same goes for gun hunting I myself shoot for behind the skull it is an immediate kill site. Our average shot is 250 yds. or less where we hunt and a lot of shots under 100 yds.

Hunting is much Like adjusting if you are going to do it, DO IT RIGHT!!!!

Nothin better than an elk roast cooked in a crock  Pot all day .Meat falls apart. Very tasty you can add vegies like onions, Taters and Garlic.

Maybe a few beef bullion cubes. This meat has absolutely no fat in it. it is very lean.

Since the Elk meat is very lean with no fat , as in a steak is graded by the amount of marbling, the fat is supposed to be a major part of taste, so what does elk taste like with no fat ?

it is usually very tender and tastes a lot like BEEF. They eat a lot of the same foods that beef eat.

I will admit a huge bull will be tougher and they will probably have it made into burger in which case they will mix beef suet with the elk meat to hold it together.

As I was typing my question to you Jerry, my 7 year old little girl saw the pictures of your Elk and said WOW, that's a big reindeer and then told me a joke her friend told her the other day

I have been on a hunting forum and we have had polls showing that Elk meat is in most Hunters top 3 of meats to eat.

I have taken a Black Buck Antelope and a buddy of mine took an Axis which usually fall into the top 3 of those that have eaten these two as well.

Out around Camp Wood, Texas. Texas has populations of Exotic species of game animals greater than some of the countries of origin.

These were also free range on a cattle and goat ranch not an exotic game ranch. The guy only charged us $200.00 to take each animal.
