That's pretty sweet, Meg.

At least you know I'm paying attention.

I'm not sure if Larry is talking about the same thing, but it looks like the left one is a little bit bigger than the right one....yet maintaining a wonderful degree of conformance and consistency against a magnificent backdrop of a sunset.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments.

Since this thread already has a crowd

milling around and mumbling, what

about a question that no one could

possibly find controversial?

What do you'll think will be the effect of

State Farm pulling out of State Florida

(over two year by non renewal)

on adjusters, adjusting companies,

hurricanes, the insurance commissioner,

state taxpayers, federal taxpayers, other

insurance companies, the price of real estate,

the citrus crop, or the socialization of the

insurance industry? Take your pick. Or is this

just a stylized game of chicken between SF and the IC

with one of them expected to blink?

Naw Larry,

You dont wanna wear a 100#+ costume, with feathers 8' wide and prade down Market Street in Philadelphia at 8 degrees on New Years Day, do you?

Stay where you are , and keep chiding all, as it does seem to fit your personallity.

Guy,

A few years back, Farmers and Texas Ins Dept got into a little contest that made most of the Texas newspapers. After being castigated publicly by the insurance department at length with lots of front page headlines, Farmers mailed out 275,000 non-renewals. (Or thereabouts)

A couple of weeks later, the apology by the Texas insurance department was at the bottom of page 7 in small print.

If you're gonna bluff or bet in a game with stakes this high, you better have the beans to back it up.

Who knows how the thing in Florida is going to go but I'd bet the one with the money wins.

If you look at the PIF (policies in force) of State Farm, You will see they are by far the biggest kid on the block. When I was a Farmers agent, STate farm had twice the PIF of #2 who had almost twice the PIF of #3. Bottom line is State Farm can pull out of Fla and not blink. Companies are not known for their loyalty, especially when $$ are at stake. And who can blame them, they are a for profit organization. As far as adjusters are concerned, looks like Citizens certifications will be a prime commodity. I have been avoiding it, but I may give in. The fact is, the world will still go round with or without State Farm in Fla.

I think S.F. means it. The State of Florida Insurance Department (as well as the State Courts) has been on a 20 year (or longer) campaign of bashing Insurance companies and doing everything they can to increase their costs of doing business while refusing to allow them to charge a premium based on sound underwriting principals. Not to worry another SF is ready to step up to the plate: The Socialist Florida Insurance Company, AKA Citizens. And such a financially sound entity it is. We can be sure, however, their business will soon dramatically increase. Such is the danger of a little bit of socialism. It is very easy and becomes much too tempting for them (the State) to force all their competition out of the game. I guess competition is a good thing unless you are competing with the State. Monopolies are bad, unless they are State owned? It almost makes one hope 2011 or 2012 brings the FL Insurance Dept. the monster Hurricane they so richly deserve but can so ill afford. But when has affordability ever entered a politician's mind? And Insurance commissioners are politicians first in FL. Buying votes by bashing the big bad insurance companies. What a gullible electorate. But then apparently the politicians don't want the Insureds to pay the entire costs of insurance, they would rather the taxpayers foot a big portion of the bill. That way, the "poor people" can still afford insurance and the "rich" will pay their "fair share". We should all remember to thank them when we become poor, as we surely will, when socialism has run its full course. We will all be able to buy insurance from the State, but won't be able to afford to buy anything worth insuring.

Alan,
Funny you should mention Jim and Dave. I suspect Mr Snappy is an alias being used by one of us. Not me though.

Larry W.,

Though I suspect that the Snappy Guy is an alias, I don't take him to be a long timer in the business. One of the things that happens when you live in a country for a longer time is that you pick up the language. Snappy seems more like someone who just crossed the border looking for a Warholian experience (15 minutes of fame).

That having been said, kudos to you, Snapmeister, for bringing up the State Farm issue.  Though the manner in which you introduced it smacked of your usual gnat-like responses, the departure of State Farm from Florida is very big news.  I suspect it has as much to do with the legal climate in Florida with regard to insurance cases as it does with actual property exposure.

They say Jim Flynt would put up a post

and then argue with himself through an

alias or aliases. I don't know, you hear things.

And some say he tried to take over Cado in

some kind of cyber  coup d'état or go into

competition with it. Memories fail and the

fog rolls  in, but he sure could liven up a thread.

And that's worth a lot on a dull day.

Florida officials have a long term goal of

foisting off some of the catastrophe damage

costs of their residents (including premiums)

onto the backs of the residents of the rest of the

country forcing others to subsidize those

living in _The Land of Sunshine_.  And until then

they collar votes by ragging on and harshly

regulating  the insurance companies that operate

within their borders. And when that "blessed day"

actually comes Actuarial Science can be completely

severed from the insurance business. And all things

can be settled politically without  regard to how safe

it is to live here or there.  (Got kind of lathered up

there, like my old grandpa, a Southern Baptist

preacher, used to when he would take to the pulpit

and the spirit would be on him.)
