Today the ram memory went into the new computers, 8GB per machine.

Also, I started research on the new Mac Pro with the new I7 chip. It will be the fastest computer that is commonly available to the consumer. In 8GB trim w/2xI7 chips seems that it will cost about 5 _ 6 grand USD. It will run the latest Apple O/S with VMWare installed and 32 bit XP Pro and 64 bit Windows 7.

This afternoon a very nice chat person at Xactimate assured me that version 25.1 will run with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, would anyone care to share experiences with this.

Have you done any experimenting with Linux in addition to Apple? It seems a lot cheaper to run Linux than shelling out money for Apple.

You are right, Linux is cheaper and will run on the machines we built, and if I remember that is how this project started, we were going to run Linux with VMWare and then run several virtual machines in VMWare. Then for some reason that I don't remember we decided to run Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit without Linux or VMWare. I am still considering an Apple machine, probably a Mac Pro with dual I7 chips with the latest Apple OS and VMWare Fusion and 64 bit and 32 bit and more than one version of Xactimate.

The direct answer to your question is no, but we considered it.

Chuck, I am curious as to why you need all that power in a PC.

Whoa Chuck, don't waste your time with VM Ware if you plan on using IntegriClaim.  VM Ware resets MSB's encryption when you reboot.  With this fact alone, I became fearful for whatever else it might have done and switched over to Parallels.  I chose this one at the recommendation of an Xactimate trainer who was using a mac for his claims.  I've been using Simsol, MSB, and Xactimate (dual versions) consistently for the past six months on my Mac without a hitch.

Parallels is nice since it has a 'coherence' feature that allows you to run your estimating software in windows while your are webrowsing and word processing with your mac software.  I still have to restart the windows OS everyday as it still has its characteristic 'glitchiness', but the mac- I just have to restart it about once every two weeks or a month.

Chuck's always been good about taking advantage of whatever the latest and greatest technology is out there and I'm not surprised that he's making serious consideration for that machine.  It takes a lot of time to test the latest technolgies

Chuck, if you get it, let me know if all that power makes your puter levitate so I can get rid of my laptop stand.

Tom, I get older I find that my toys are more complex. And computer gear is a first year write off.

At this juncture I don't know that I will be running IntegriClaim, but the possibility is out there. Some of the files I am assisting with contain several estimates written in different estimating programs, I want to be able to run any program and several programs at the same time. I am working on a claim now that has 5 estimates written by 3 different adjusters.

If anyone has read my posts on the "what kind of vehicle do I need" thread, know I am a tightwad. My gateway cost $600 new, I later found it on sale for $275 and bought an extra which my daughter has taken over. It has never failed to run the software needed, and runs it as fast as I can type. I have run XM8, Integra, Powerclaim, ADP, Mitchell and Pathways. If I ever spend $3300 on a computer, It better do more than just compute. I have always said that my money looks better in my bank where no one can see it than in my driveway or where everyone can see it. That works for me.

Generally speaking Parallels is faster than VM Fusion

I'm with Jim on this. I have two identical Compaq laptops that will do anything I ask them to do.

I bought one on Ebay and the other in a restaurant parking lot.

No joke.

I think I have around $600 in the pair, including the extra ram I bought at Fry's.

I thought I heard a rumor that the Applebee's parking lot guy was selling off his equipment out of his trunk these days.

I am looking for information on Sun xVM VirtualBox. Has anyone used it with an Apple OS?

That's something! I can see many uses for it in our field, diagrams, estimates, information collection, material ID and so on.

I've used the Panasonic Toughbook convertible tablet.  I use a shoulder strap, so I can swing the thing aside when I need both hands, or under my vest when I'm outside in weather.  I can't imagine using a normal laptop in the field.  Several of you obviously do, and they must work well for you.  Is there, in your collective wisdom, a disadvantage for using a tablet instead of a laptop?

I just purchased aTX2-1270US Notebook HP tablet to see if it is viable as a tool for estimate systems, primarily MS/B. So far so good. It is light and has a useful battery life of 3 hours. They are not that expensive if you catch them on sale. We are anxious to try it out on an actual storm, if CL ever gets any new business, or sends some of their good IA's out instead of their core people.
