Ray, what I am reading from our new carrier friend is what I was shocked to learn during the fall '08 assignment at a carrier in the Dallas area. You see, you and I were taught and embraced the correct and now antiquated business model of the 'Personal Approach' of providing customer service in a dignified and truly professional manner.

But, that was then and this is now. Like our new friend says, the metrics have taken over and the beans will be counted. If time must pass, it will. Are phone calls returned? Not like they used to be. In fact, while there at that carrier I learned the new philosophy of customer avoidance. All of the regular employees never answered the phone, it automatically went to voice mail, which was full and accepted no more calls. Before I accepted this new philosophy, Insureds would profusely thank me for merely speaking to them and would beg not to be transfered to their actual adjuster on the file as they would never hear from him/her. I tell you all, it was wild. It was the Brave New World of Avoidance. The same would go for lawyers, contractors of all kinds, various government officials; it didn't matter. And, what is your name, all would ask? Sometimes my name would be John Wayne, or Wayne John, or Abdul Amas, or even Operator 7. I would alter my voice and inflections to sound foriegn from several countries, Pakastani, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Irish, whatever I could come up with.

Why, you ask? Simple, this carrier was engaging in acts so contary to any of the proper business practices I actually feared the TV cameras would descend along with parachuting process servers and crazed Insureds with flaming torches and pitchforks. It's no wonder they had armed guards at all the doors checking everyones photo ID even if they just stepped outside the door for a smoke. I hope never again to work in a place like that. But, such is the new reality of claims handling at the carrier level.

Tall tales?

The mitigation company arrives late morning on a Friday and leaves on Monday.  The adjuster inspects a few days later thinking he is inspecting a frozen pipe in the attic loss.  The home looked like new construction in that there were only subfloor and studs left.  The best part was the mitigation bill was over $75k.  The demo did not start until around 5pm and the vendor had a large crew out all weekend.  Those after-hours line items are a killer.

Toilet overflow in upstairs master bedroom (main level/finished basement style home).  In the initial overflow, there was a good amount of “solid material”.  The trusty mitigation company extracted and set up a drying system like it was a fresh water loss.  Three or four days in to the job, the inside adjuster asks me to review the file and I had to call the vendor and ask what his reasoning was.  In one of the states I handle it is very common to have insulation between the floors.  The basement ceiling had an interesting mix of bat insulation soaked in fun sauce.

How about 10 air movers and a large dehumidifier sitting on soaking wet vinyl laminate flooring (Pergo).

I have a picture an insd sent me of a stack of seven or eight axial fans that I paid for.  They were stacked and wrapped for the whole dry down (they were all on the bill).

Let me just say that I am pretty excited about some new mitigation pricing line items being tested by Exactimate right now.  Me thinks the game will be changing soon (for the better for everyone).

And there you have it, Ladies & Gentlemen! Enjoy the ride while it lasts for your ticket on the merry-go-round lasts but such a short time.

What was that you were saying about the lawyers and their legal blackmail scheme? All it takes is a friendly judge to make the wonders of large settlements happen? And, maybe they could use the pencil whipping skills of a few old mossback dinosaurs?

It's okay by me, but check with Ray. He's the Membership Committee Chairman.

Here is where I must consult the Rules Of Organization. If one person does it, he/she is deemed a pyschotic. If two people do it, it's a conspiracy. Three people doing it is a movement. When four people do it, they're a mob. With five people, it becomes a societal shift. And six people become a nationally recognized political party subject to certain taxation benefits as well as ridicule by either or both of the conservative and liberal cable TV channels.

Personally, the more the merrier up to the point when there's too many sticky fingers getting in the pot. That's why Ray is the Chairman of the Membership Committee. Not just any old hairball can climb aboard this turnip wagon. We have standards!

Aw come on guys. I am not the oldest adjuster who ever worked in Houston. Tom Staton worked up until 86 when he died. But I do have an  claim I need some help on since I do not use exactimate. I have a smoke claim that the water suckers did not get to first with two older men, one is a neet freek and the other is a big slob and both have a lot of sneakers of assorted ages. I don,t have the correct cleaning codes ; should I call in the experts or try to muddle through this with SWAG's. I don,t want to chase this loss to attorneys. Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.
