A few things:

1)To JD: If you have a folder on your desktop for the file, put all your photos there. In xmate once you add areas (roof, rooms etc) and open for adding line items there is a small camera icon. Click on it and browse to the folder and choose your photos. I do not use xactimate much because the carrier i work for uses simsol, but i have played with it some. For all diagrams i use another cad program separate from xmate, so not real familiar with the sketch part. My photo sheets are completed with a micrsoft access program. Everthing is pdf'd and stacked to compile the final report.

2) Question? Does xmate attach photos to the area when printed out, or does it only compose a separate photo sheet printed with the estimate, but below the last page of the line item estimate? I cannot seem to attach the photo to, say the roof or room etc. I know simsol has this ability but i am uncertain about xmate.

The only scoping Macro I have is for Emergency Service billing. I have all the common items that usually come up. Plywood, 2x4, tarps etc. Other than that every claim is different and I scope each room and enter each room's line items as needed. Like Bob H stated earlier learn the line items in the Xactimate program.With monthy updates/ price changes it is important to keep up with the new codes.
