Pretty much noted what I am hoping to get feedback on - in the subject line. I am going to be in the southern and southeastern states this fall, and want to get an air card that will work well in those regions....and am looking for suggestions, pros or cons on both.

In my opinion, Verizon has a slight edge over AT&T in coverage and service. Either one should work well where you've got a signal, but no guarantee of a signal. Verizon costs $60 +tax/month.

100% no doubt verizon. I've had a few and Verizon is by far the best. I would consider getting one of the porable external Wi-Fi gadgets instead of a card though.

I just read an article that reported a 2 billion dollar plan by ATT to overhaul its 3G network. Att intends to upgradde to 4G (about twice as fast as 3G). This is all supposed to begin this year. Considering that many other parts of the world have had much faster internet access speeds than the USA, it's about time. Even though Sprint and Clear both have 4G now, the coverage areas are limited. Verison has yet to announce their plans, but if they are going to compete, they have the potential to make the biggest impact. Their coverage area coupled with services like those planned by ATT would be a great leap forward.
Another interesting product launch that ATT has not announced a date for yet is a hybrid cellular/satellite phone combined in one device. Since satellite service has come down in price, it may be a useful and cost effective tool.

I am working the central US and am using the verizon. It works great. Also look into the little notebook they sell. It has a built in card and when I got mine it was only $40.00, after rebate, more than the pop in card and you had a full computer to boot. This allowed me to set up my laptop in permanent position and use the notebook in the field.

I have used the Sprint card and currently have a Verizon card. I believe I am getting slightly better coverage and speed out of the Verizon card.
Both offered great coverage but slight edge to Verizon. |

You could always just check those cute little maps- red, blue, organge to find out precisely what kind of coverage is available from the bigger players. Any other information is pretty much anecdotal.
Just in case you already have a Blackberry with a Data plan, an Aircard would likely (your existing plan may not have coverage) be a waste of money. 'Tether' allows you to pay one price, one time for its software as it 'tethers' into the existing Data plan from your phone. The Aircard uses an additional monthly subscription and works the same way as Tether. If you stumble across a coupon code like I did, you can probably get it for 40% or 50% off. |

I'd love to save some money on phone and internet, but can you 'tether' and talk at the same time?
It's very common for me to be on the phone and on line at the same time. |

Just left Verizon and was told that Verizon tether will not allow talk and online at the same time, you do one or the other,

I am also in the same boat here. I am just getting into this line of work and need to establish an internet feed that will allow me to work in the field. Since I have cell service with AT&T and my home phone and internet is set up with Verizon, can I just add the feature to either exsisting account or will it be better to just go ahead and start a business account and get new phone lines and internet service all on one account? Whew, that was a lot to say in one breath.....
I have thought about getting the iPhone and then using a wireless printer/scanner/fax/caopier machine to scan all documents directly to the iPhone and then email them that way, but not sure how big most claim files are going to be. Can anyone suggest or advise on the average file size that is usually transmitted when you do send in a claim via email?

I am not the person to ask, but after I got a 2 person bill for excess time with Verizon that was over $800 for one month I wigged out. I went to Walmart and purchased their $40.00 LG and Straight Talk unlimited for $45.00 per month, by the way the network is Verizon which is very strong in TX and the SE.
I think I can get my air card( Verrizon with a new number) to work for $45.00 per month unlimited, if I want, I think. You can buy the cards at Walmart or leave your credit card # with Walmart and they will subtract the amount each month. |

Before you find a place to set up, checking for 2g, 3g or 4g coverage is essential. In 2008 we set up in Houma, LA and found out later that AT&T only has 2g coverage. A cell phone repeater is an excellent purchase.

So far, it is sounding to me like the two are almost the same as far as service is concerned. AT&T is supposed to be upgrading to 4G this summer which will parallel it's competitors. It just sounds like getting a repeater will do the trick and allow me fast reliable internet service anywhere I may go to work.
Just out of curiosity, does either of these providers allow tehtering and if so, how much does that normally cost you per month? I have heard that it can be quite expensive.

The local AT&T store tells me that I cannot tether my I phone to my laptop. He said it "can" be done with a "jail broken" phone but you will have a lot of hang ups and freeze ups.

As far as I know the most reliable way to know what area has 2g and what area has 3g is to call a telephone vendor in the area. I can say from experience that AT&T in Houma, LA has 2g.
T-Mobile in Little Rock is 3g.
Also the various companies monitor connections, so AT&T will know if your phone is tethered. Best not to use a tethered phone on storm as the carrier may notice and shut off your service.

There is a shareware program out there that will let your mobile phone act as a modem. This allows you to use dial-up internet as a backup from anywhere. It is slower than molasses but is cheap. Allows you to also send faxes from your computer.
