Newt:
Only a guess without seeing the actual shingle, but this sounds like stress cracking with heat induced fracture damage. With shingles this thick, one should see accompanying damage to the metal vents, no matter how heavy they are. I just cannot fathom the reason this does not show up in a photo but is readily visible to the naked eye. Like Kile, I have never seen hail leave any type of crack in a composite shingle. Please keep us all informed of the final outcome of this claim.

Well, Newt, if you have digital pictures, why don't you post one or two on here and let us take a look. Hopefully we will be able to help.

Don't fall into the trap of :well every other roof is getting replaced, this one must be damaged too." You are there to verify the damage. If I had a dollar for everytime an insured said "what do you mean there's no damage, every roof in the neighborhood is getting replaced" I could buy that new DLP TV I want. Usually when someone says that I can stand in their driveway and point to 2 or 3 other houses that I denied on the same street.

I found the problem, no straight down hits, seven month old damage and the damage to the bottom of the shingles "was" caused by hail. The bottom edge damage was noted over the entire roof, it was the most fragile part and the angle or slope caused the hail to chip off large chunks of the bottom edge. I have some closeup shots showing the faint swipes leading to the edge.
Hail did not leave marks on these valleys, if had been a 4:12 instead of a 14:12 I am sure I would have found some.
My problem was not looking for swipes instead of direct hits.
I have to get this supplemental report out on these photos, and will get back with some shots later.
It was an interesting claim not to mention the hazard. I didn't get a rush out of this, at first I was just plain scared. Thanks everyone for joining in, gotta go.
