Can anyone tell me what an "average" cat adjuster makes a year, after expenses? I am a property adjuster with 24 years experience in personal and commercial lines and considering cat work. I would like to hear it from the horses mouth's.

Steve, I'll start what is sure to be a controversy.

With what you say "I am", if you are staff with a carrier inside as a senior examiner, your gross salary is approx $75K, or if on the road, upwards to $80K. If you are I/A doing 'day to day', your own gross should be in the $90K plus area, and could easily reach $100K; all subject to 'workplace deductions'. These of course are regional figures, in a different marketplace than your own.

Unless you are at home picking weed seeds with the chickens in the yard, why Oh why, would you want to consider cat work? There is a thread or two around the forums that talked about this last year. But, a $100K gross to you in cat work, would not net to you after expenses, what any of the above carrier positions or I/A would. Then, you have to consider the likelyhood of grossing $100K at cat work, considering today's marketplace and the growing alternative methods to traditional cat work, to handle storm claims.

It will be interesting to see the varying thoughts and opinions, that flow from your question.

When I went from Cat work to staff work I calculated my year at 100K. Then I put my package together. Salary, benefits, car, insurance, employer participation of FICA, etc... I figured my package was worth that 100K figure. I believe your motivation to do CAT work has to be for things other than the cash. Boredom, travel, new surroundings etc. Most who are posting lately (including me) have not worked much lately. All are waiting for a BIG storm to catch up. My biggest caution? TAKE CARE OF YOUR TAXES!!!

Good Luck

And now for something completely crass...

Mr Sbonser, since you are from Utah and may be a Mormon, I suggest you practice polygomy with about 14 wives. They can all go out and get decent paying jobs then you wouldn't have to worry about money.

Granted with 14 wives one would need to be deaf to shield out the nagging, but that would be a small price to pay.

Thanks for everyones input. You gave me the insight I was looking for. As to Ghostbuster, crass is right. You are wrong on all counts. I will say to you, do not compute your immature galllinations prior to the puncture of their brittle epidermis.

Sbonser: Quick question for you. I love words and was not familiar with your use of "galllinations" (with 3 L's), and could not find the word in the dictionary even when I only use 2 L's or 1 L.

What is a galllination?

Just curious. And Thanks for any help you can provide.

PS: Don't pay any attention to Ghostbuster. He's back out in the work release program on double secret probation and it's been so long since he was with a woman that he must have come to this website accidentally while researching his family tree from up in West Virginia trying to find a date.

I think he is fancifying up the adage about not counting ones chicks before they hatch. This is really nice imagery.

By the way, Jim...are you trying to say my vestigial tail is not a normal appendage? What's next?, that webbed toes and fingers are the exception? What kind of world is this, anyway?

Well that could be it, or, he might be suggesting that some guys just can't find 14 wives.

That's one of the nice things about being single Ghost.
When they hit 40 you can trade 'em in for two 20's!

First, let me say that I am not in favor of discussing pay, gross, salary whatever in this public forum.

Second. as we all know anything that can be measured, when graphed falls on a bell curve. A few measurements fall above three standards deviations above the mean, but most measurements fall within two standard deviations of the mean and some fall below three standard deviations below the mean. I and a lot of others can tell you that earning a salary below the mean salary of a cat adjuster won't make the payment on that four door diesel pick up that is the favored ride of cat adjusters. In short if you have a secure position where you are stay there.

There should only be two l's. I am not sure about the spelling. It means "chickens". Don't count your chickens before they are hatched is what I was saying.

Just an idea, I recently left a large vendor of which I was on the Cat team. The key is getting called out and there are alot of people ahead of you. If you don't have some secure connections that you can really count on, you had better stay where you are. I'm on assignment working northwest direction hail and it is pretty easy to make more that 10k a week as long as the claims keep coming in.

The grass is always greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed!
