Lanny Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. The Classic 3 is strickly a distance measuring Disto and the Classic 5 has more functions. If you are measuring distance only the older classic is an excellent tool but if you need to measure heights from a distance or do other measuring functions it probably is not what you want. How much are you looking to pay? Now if you are looking at a distoc that has the following keys it might do what you want. + key, - key, x key, = key, f key and O key.
Hope this helps Larry Clark lkclark@covad.net |

The pythagoras function on the Classic 5 is wonderful but be aware that any movement on your part will affect the end results. If you need a pinpoint measurement to the exact inch, you may not get it. An example is a 17 ft wall height. If you are holding the Disto against your body to steady the instrument, even movement of 1/4 inch will affect the final calculations and you might wind up with 17'2" OR 16'11". The instruction manual warns do not move.
They are best used for pinpoint measuring when mounted on a small camera tripod. I have one for my digital camera. These are compact enough to carry in a pocket. Chuck Deaton probably would carrying it in his fly fishing vest, however. |
