My grandparents spent the majority of thier careers as "Storm Chasers" as they used to refer to themselves. I have fond childhood memories of visiting my grandparents during the summers (in whatever place they happenned to be working). I would go with my grandfather and help him with the ladder and measurements - ahhh Good Times!!! I always admired thier lifestyle - They were not wealthy, but they enjoyed what they did and spent a great deal of time working and playing together. They also seemed to spend a great deal of time with me as a child. Anyway, I am looking for people that may have known them from years ago - John E. Schott, and Pat (his wife) worked all over the country (MS, Idaho, Alexandria LA, Tampa, Dallas, and many others). Hurricane Camille brought them to the MS Gulf Coast they liked the area so much they decided to make it "Home Base". Ultimately that is how I came to live in the same area.
Years ago (1983/84), after my grandparents encouraged me to do so, I applied to General Adjusters Bureau School and was rejected. They stated a minimum of two years of college was required and I had just finished high school. I casually moved on by the opportunity and eventually earned a BS/BA and now am a fairly successful independant factory agent selling industrial products. Although I have done well in my career, the rewards have been primarily financial. I have reached a level where I am dis-enchanted with what I do and whom I do it for. I met a gentlemen recently who works in the career my Grandparents so enjoyed, and I am seriously considerring applying my strengths toward a career change. After reading many of the postings here, I sense there are some who "Poor Mouth" in an attempt to prevent other potential competitors from moving in. Others seem to be very sincere and honest about the realities of the job - those I really appreciate!!! I know it may sound strange to some, but I almost feel like this may be in my blood, or that fate is pulling me back toward where I once ventured.
I would be very eager to speak to anyone who knew my grandparents, or even those willing to lend some sincere advice to someone serious about breaking in to this industry. If you went to the trouble to read all of this - THANKS! |
