This is a human interest thing for all you new kids, I say kids because every one under 55 is a kid to me.
You have the chance of a lifetime here on CADO, and the information is out there for the asking. Set goals and reach for them, if an old dude like me can do it, you can do it better. Get into these discussions with both feet even though they be in your mouth, as mine are most of the time. This is the way we learn and you will have more respect for our mentors, leads and storm managers.
I got started in this venture at the request of my son. When I sold my business and retired my son was the office manager and blind.
After twenty-nine years of blindness, we found a doctor at Havard who was doing great things with limbal stem cell transplants. We went for it . Jon got his sight back, drivers license with no restrictions and landed a job with SBA adjusting in Houston. He adjusted over 200 claims in just a few weeks. He went on to get his TX. Lic. and was offered a job as a staff Agent Manager with Farmers. Three day before he was to report we got some devastating news. Jon had inoperable cancer, he called Farmers and gave them the news. Being determined he applied to Wardlaw and they were going to put him in mold claims. Things got worse and the Doctor only gave him 3 months at the outside. He bought a house in Texas and moved his wife there near her family. After unloading he colapsed, and spent the next week in the hosp. Of course I went out there, to be with them. He told me I needed to go back to work, retirement wasn't doing me any good. He suggested adjusting and I agreed. I stayed in Texas for a while and went school. I had to drive 105 miles each way. I finished and got my Lic. Farmers Cert and Exactimate and showed my son. That was on my 75th birthday, two days later Jon passed away. He was a non smoker, and what got him was the anti rejection drugs. All of this has happened in the past few months.
I got a long haul ahead, a lot to learn and a lot of new friend to make, we can do it together. With over 1700 members this could be one of the most powerful orgs. in insurance.

Newt, I learned a few things today.

First, I'm still a kid by your definition. Second, life isn't that bad when you look around. Third, you will likely "win" Roy's jacket. Fourth, I miss Ghostbuster, who seems to be absent from this new CADO forums arrangement.

Newt, it is with sincere respect that I offer my personal opinion that I do not think the intent of these forums is that of a personal chat room / line. Even this "general forum", is noted as for discussion of industry related topics that are not specific to other titled forums.

One wise old white haired gentleman, whose shirt tail I hung onto when I was starting out 30 some years ago, told me something that is just as relevant in the current claims environment - you will learn more by listening, we were created with two ears and only one mouth; there must be a reason.

I was told to listen carefully and listen closely to "how" people said things. When I talked my boss and him into letting me go along on road calls, he had one firm order; do not speak, smirk or laugh. After each call when we were back in the car he would quizz me to death on who said what and why and how it related to the policy at hand.

Your certificates and licences are a required part of your "apprenticeship". However, if as you stated earlier today in another post, you figure you are 1/4 along the way on your journey; I think you should have another look at the map. The 1/4 that you may have alloted to policy knowledge will prove to be equal to at least 10/4s of your certs and licences in time and study needed to provide value to you in your pursuit. Gaining some field experience with a mentor and putting that into perspective relative to the theory and policy wordings will equal at least another 10/4s. Get yourself some texts and enrol in the AIC program - read and listen - and get some theory absorbed.

I had rather not win the jacket. In the first place I am not the deserving one, but I would like to help nominate a deserving person.

Today they had one of a series of meatings at Insurance comm. office.
A consumer adv. group, from all walks are going to ask for some policy changes. I think they will have another next month. I dont forsee any changes because the election is comming up and the present commish will be out of here....We had one change during his tenure. The one year limit on the time an insured couldsue was changed to a six years. That don't seem right. Only in Alabama!!!

First, my goal is to become an apprentice in one year , that was my target, to be in the field.
Secondly, I guess my personal problems got in the way of the main objective. That was getting new people to join in the talks. If we just read these posts and do not participate, an insurance magazine would serve the purpose. That was the sole purpose ,get others involved.
Third, I still don't want the jacket, I would not deserve it and most certainly would not accept it over the more deserving.
Fourth, I am a people person and reserve when around others. I also have a sense humor, without
being offensive. This is not about insurance or even related and I have asked Admin to remove
my original post on the subject.

I have applied and been approved for a FEMA training session for the 12th sep It is for housing inspection and I have no idea if it will be of value other than knowing a little more about FEMA. I do not expect much other than the use of the pocket computer and getting a number for logging into the FEMA training programs. Has any one tried this?
