Eric there are many eager to know the answers to your questions. Our research shows only about 50% of the property insurance adjusters are computerized. I thought all cats were using adjusting software but I just found out yesterday Allstate has adjusters working Floyd and some are doing hand written estimates. They do have to have an certain brand of software do get their assignments and update their diaries daily but they did not have time to learn the estimating part so they are sending in hand written claims by next day air. Maybe we at Hawkins Research should get out of the software development business and get into the overnight delivery business :)

What are your early findings concerning the total # of adjusters and the split between staff/independent? I have heard the number 25,000 to 50,000 total property adjusters. Some say that is low. Concerning the staff vs. independent I still think there are more staff adjusters except when the storms hit. I know of several carriers and some just about totally use adjusting companies while others only use staff adjusters. One I know of that is going totally with staff and is finding it hard to make ends meet. There seems to be cycles of more staff then more independents then more staff.

Good luck with your research. It is greatly needed by all in the industry. What are your interests in the adjusting industry?

Hi, My name is Eric Lemond and I'm a graduate student at the University of Colorado. I'm doing some market research on insurance adjusters and was hoping someone out there could help me with the following questions.

How many adjusters are there currently working in the property damage (due to catastrophe or pipe break or other) area?

What percentage of these are independent contractors?

What percentage of adjusters use computer software to help them process claims?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Eric
