I have worked with Boeckh, Simsol (DOS and the so-called Windows version), Xactimate and have tried a trial period of Integriclaim and Powerclaim. The latter two were the most intuitive and user friendly, but estimating software is one of those software products that is chosen by the guys who see the management reports and not by the end users.
Since two of the big three companies prefer the X, we're stuck with learning it, using it, and (some of us chumps) paying for it.
The real selling point of an estimating program is in its ability to doevetail with other programs. If it just sits there by itself and makes the user copy the results with a pencil and then type them into another program, the insurance carrier may be happy, but the adjuster who is spending his free time cursing his way through the stack is looking desparately for another job.
I have worked for years on staff and am a cat adjuster now. It is amazing to feel the attitude change from dread to glee at the approach of a thunderhead. Part of it is the fact that most staff field adjusters contribute at least an additional 50% of their supposed free time to the 40 hour work week out of fear or the goodness of their hearts. Another 100 claims when the work week is already 60 hours long is a devastating prospect. We were made to do piece work. Salary is celery, but with little ones at home, most of us decide that dinner with the family is better that no time.
So we adapt and change as we choose to or must do; careers as the kids grow up and estimating programs as need be. __________________________________
