Carol Nuss died on 12/25/2003 when a mudslide hit the KOA he was staying at while on assignment with Pilot for tbe fires. Carol was a member of CADO.

"Wellington mourns loss of Carol Nuss
According to close family and friends, Carol Nuss was a highly admirable person. Nuss is said to have been someone who helped people. He was even helping people up until the moment he died.
Nuss died over the Christmas holiday when a mudslide hit a KOA campground in California where he was staying. According to the Associated Press, Nuss was helping another camper when the mudslide hit the campground in San Bernardino County.
"He was a very good man," said Kenny Boyd, Wellington, who had been a friend of Nuss for 30 years. "He was just always willing to help someone."
Boyd said he got to know him while Nuss was operating his local heating and cooling business, which Nuss did for several years.
"(He was) a good family man, good husband -- just a good person," Boyd said.
Boyd added that he, along with several other members of this community, thought highly of Nuss.
Nuss was in California because of a new job as an insurance adjuster for damages due to catastrophes. He was there examining damage done by the recent fires in California when the mudslide hit on Christmas Day. His wife of 38 years, Bev, was with him. She escaped and survived.
According to his son, Kirk Nuss, Wichita, his parents were traveling with an RV as their office and pulling a car behind it. While they were off for Christmas, they didn't have time to come back to Kansas and then return to California for work.
"I'm pretty sure he was working on Christmas Eve to pass the time," Kirk said.
Kirk said that his father trained to be an insurance adjuster about a year ago and was loving his new job.
"They liked to travel and they liked to see their family," Kirk said. "They weren't going to give up their home. They truly loved Wellington."
Kirk explained that his father had all kinds of ways that he helped people. He explained that one Christmas Eve a woman called asking how her claim was going and she said she needed the money so she could have Christmas. So, Nuss met with her and gave her a check for the money she was owed on her claim that day. Other times, Nuss would lose the billing ticket on the way home if he knew a client didn't have much money.
"I could tell you stories like that all day," Kirk said of his father.
Kirk said his parents had been in California since Oct. 31. The California fires was only the second job Nuss had since becoming an adjuster. His first job was on the East Coast to assess the damage left by Hurricane Isabel.
"He loved it. He was really good at it," Kirk said.
According to Kirk, Nuss fell out of an attic a couple of years ago and broke his foot. The doctor told him he couldn't do his work for the heating and cooling business anymore, so he began looking into what else he could do. Kirk said his father had friends in another state who worked in the insurance adjusting business, which is how he became interested in it.
Authorities warned mountain community residents to brace for more rain and possible flooding as rescue workers continued to search for the victims of a mudslide that buried a church camp on Christmas Day. The total number of deaths from the disaster at the Greek Orthodox camp mounted to 12 on Sunday as five more bodies were recovered. Two other people died in another mudslide Thursday at a campground about five miles away." |
