I'll probably get thrown out of here for asking such a questiion, how do you get your foot in the door to get started adjusting? I am very interested in "storm chasing". I can't get experience without working. Am I just dreaming the impossible dream?

Is this not a topic that belongs in the "Getting Started" forum?
However Joe, aside from that, welcome to CADO.
First, would you explain your opening remark, I'm always curious why people express the feeling of intimidation, in their posts and questions.
I would also be quite interested in your reasons why you want to be an adjuster. What is your motivation for that pursuit?
Have a good look through the "Getting Started" threads, and see if any of your questions and concerns are addressed there.
On the surface, your dream is not an impossible dream. It does take effort and dedication to the goal. |

The impossible is possible but it just takes longer based on my personal experience in my field. |

Joe, If you get a chance make the convention. You may make some connections and be off like a heard of turkeys. Seriously, this is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door, I'm not an adjuster yet but all these good ole boys from the country will tell you the same thing. I have heard more success stories comming out of these conventions than any other. You just got to do some face to face selling. Good luck. |

I'm a good 'ole boy Newt and I wouldn't call you a heard of turkeys!
J'pops, tell us your background and we'll give you our magic 8-ball prediction of your future in this industry. All I will say for now is alot of us have been doing it for a long time and we're not exactly running the country or anything, although I think Clayton is running for the presidency of Canada in 2006. He's got my vote! |

I didn't know I was doing something wrong. I worked for Mobil Oil for 23 years as a field reliability specialist. I worked in an oil field that was the largest Mobil had at that time. Just a good ole boy from Texas looking for work. Not trying to step on any toes, just needing to work. Retired and immediately the stock market went wayyy down and so did I. Just needing work and my wife and I would enjoy the storm chasing. Thanks for replies. j3pops |

Joe, you have done nothing wrong, nor have you stepped on any toes, the 'forum' comment by me was directed at Admin; and I thank them for the change.
No one has really answered your questions yet, but it is difficult with the limited information you provide.
There are much easier ways to make a decent 'net' income, than as a independent contractor cat adjuster.
Is it the 'stormchasing' that appeals to you, or handling the claims that result from a storm?
Without prior claims experience or insurance experience, the road ahead to become an adjuster, and eventually get deployed to a storm; is all uphill and of an undefined distance.
Have a good look through the threads in the various forums, and if claims is still a lure to you after that; come on back with any specific questions.
Had another thought Joe, after I took my first pass at this post. Your background may have some value in the 'day to day' claims world. There are a number of vendors in the oil & gas sector that you may have a much better opportunity with and be able to utilize your career skills. Engineering firms that investigate oil & gas facility losses require technical people, and being an 'engineer' is not always a prerequisite. Independent adjusting firms that handle oil& gas industry losses may have a need for your background.
May be an idea to shine up a good resume, look in the phone books or source it out at a library - you know who the players are - look under adjusters, engineers, loss investigators, claims analysis - you get the idea; send 30 or 40 resumes out. Maybe there is something in the loss control area of this sector or risk management, where your acquired skills would have value. If your field expertise is strong, a claims vendor in one of those areas will find you a lot more valuable, than a cat vendor for wind or hail claims.
What do you think? |

Joe, I hope I did not give you the impression you had done something wrong. You haven't. I was saying in one sentence sorta what Clayton said later, there are easier ways to make a living. It sounds like you have tons of oil field experience. Surely you could hire yourself out as a consultant of some type. Dont get me wrong, I love this industry but by the time you get your foot in the door and enough training to be turned loose, the stock market will be back up and everyone is having drinks with little umbrellas in them again.
If you do decide to take a shot at this, there are alot of people on this site that will be glad to help point you in the right direction.
Good luck!
