Considering this work after many years of crane rental business. A year off, then the last three years as a home inspector. After speaking with cat adjuster, decided this might be what my wife and I would like to pursue. We been in business together all our married life(35 years) so we are used to hard work and long hours, but we are in our 60's. How about all you new and old catadjusters offering some advise. We would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

Are you considering doing this as a 'hobby' or do you need the money?

It's a great hobby!

Thanks for the quick reply. A little of both, but we take all endeavors very seriously. Further advise is well taken. Thanks again.

Paul, your inquiry about this specific market niche of the insurance claims industry has caught my eye; including your entry level interest of it as both a "hobby" and income producing pursuit.

I humbly suggest you carefully review a few forums found on this web site. First, have a close look at the "Supply and demand" thread and consider the opinions found there. That thread has not generated a lot of interest, nor has anyone responded in agreement with the views expressed or in disagreement with the views. However, I stand behind the opinions I expressed there; and suggest this niche is over supplied with people with varying levels of interest and skill.

Next, you may want to review the often raucous but interesting "our future" thread.

Finally, you may want to review the "resumes" section of this site. If so, click on any 10 resumes that show a "last updated date" in 2002. I believe you will find that 9 out of any 10, are not unlike yourself; no insurance experience, no claims experience, no catastrophe claims experience. Therefore, I suggest that in terms of exposure to this industry by those that have expressed an interest via posting their resumes; there is a large glut of people with no experience beyond the measure of over supply.

It would only be fair to say, that this particular market niche, due to the independent nature of the work, independent in the sense you are alone at some distant "kitchen table" when the skills of insurance claims need to be applied; that the entry to this niche "by the seat of your pants" - is not fair to you, is not fair to the customer on the other side of the kitchen table, is not fair to your customer the vendor, and is not fair to the vendor's customer the insurer.

I have never before today, not encouraged anyone to enter any segment of the insurance industry. However, I speak with both my brain and my heart, in suggesting to you that the cat claims niche is over populated at this time.

Paul, I too am retired, and started my tread uphill in this field. I have been in pursuit of my goal for six months. I have eleven certificates and three on the way, two more I hope to attain this month by testing for State Farm Certification. I have six more months before I will throw my hat in the ring as hopefully a "hey boy". If you want it bad enough, go for it, be forewarned, its not easy to do and holds no concrete promise. You gotta make it happen with no gaurantee it will.
Hey, I don't even see the light Jim and Clayton left on in the window yet. Don't judge your progress with mine, and choose your own route. I am old slow and not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Many thanks to Newt and CCarr. We sincerely appreciate your input and advise. We will act upon it. I say "we" because my wife and I have always been self employed, for better or worse you might say. At present she is introducing me to Xactimate. WOW! I'm kind of the pen and paper with clip board type, but realize those days are over. We are both in good shape. I have no problems with the physical part that will be a part of the job. Home inspection, which I'm presently doing requires being on roofs in crawl spaces attics etc. We will be attending Pacesetters school in January and feel this will be a big help, probably a down right neccessity. We very much appreciate CADO too. THANKS AGAIN MERRY CHRISTMAS
