Do the independent adjusting firms we work for carry workmans comp. insurance or is it necessary that we purchase our own disability insurance. I would like to know what firms provide workmans comp. if any. Does anyone know?

Frank:
Independant adjusting firm is the adjuster, the vendor is the agency that provides our service for a fee. The carrier is the one who uses the adjusters service, through the vendor.

The carrier adjusters have benifits and it depends on the carrier as to what benifits one would receive. Independant adjusters are self employed.

Frank, some vendors provide worker's comp coverage to their cat adjusters and some do not. You have asked a good and valid question.

Just off the top of my head, I do know that GAB and Worley provide WC for their cat adjusters.

I didn't know any of the vendors paid WC, they should be rated right at the top of the food chain. I guess thats why they get some of the best adjusters, from what I hear. Frank, there is your answer. Jim knows, I'm surprised you didn't get more response to your question and I didn't get shot down more for what I didn't know.
Vendors are not obligated for WC and those that do must have their ducks in a row because it comes off their bottom line, now we both know.

For those vendors who do not provide WC coverage, those vendors may very well have a liability exposure for any accidents incurring from or to a cat adjuster, and that liability exposure may very well be imputed to the underlying carrier.

I know some will argue immunity via the independence of independent adjusters, but that notwithstanding, (job, workplace and product) 'requirements' of a vendor (and/or carrier) may well trigger liability exposures in the workplace under law.

That conversation is of course better served under another thread, while this thread addresses the identity of vendors who provide WC coverage to their IA's.

This is an excellent and timely topic which should benefit all cat adjusters who want to know before they go.

If they are not paying workers compensation,or disability insurance, you better be charging more for your work.....all breadwinners should have work comp, if not through the employer, buy it from the state pools.

The companies that work for State Farm are required to have WC along with E&O and other coverages for their employees (catastrophe adjustrs are in fact temporary employees of the company and by definition not independent contractors, they are paid W2 wages). We have it for all adjusters we utilize.

I know I asked what firms provide WC. I have to admit that I am surprised that out of the entire industry only GAB and Worley were mentioned as providing it. I guess from the response, I can assume that the vast majority of cat adjusters have found it necessary to have their own disability insurance or figure "it won't happen to me". At the time of my original post I was considering dropping mine. I ddn't, and I guess I won't.

Actually unless you really are an independent contractor, as defined by the Workers'Comp Commission with jurisdiction, you are covered by Workers' Compensation. You may have to hire an attorney and fight, but it would be an exception if you were not covered.

Chuck is right. If you paid by W-2 you are probably covered by WC. If you are paid as an Independant Contractor then you are not covered by WC. Pilot, Renfro and Eberl also provide WC. There are probably some others out there which I have missed.

The fact is, WC is a new thing for us CAT adjusters as are the 401K's available from some of the large Cat Co's such as Pilot.
