Older than dirt! Keep up the good fight my man! Western PA does not have the conglomeration of roads, parkways by-passes, interstates etc etc like they do here in Long Island where I am working now. If I look down at my map as I am tooling down a parkway OOPS!!! I just missed my exit! Even with my GPS it's hard not to get lost out here! Now if I could get the thing to by-pass all those delis maybe I could stop stuffing my face! I have put on 5lbs. out here! |

I am slowly being dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century, but even in western Penn. I had very little trouble using maps and directions. I try to be tech. ready and able to work if the systems crash. |

Older than dirt: Does your AAA map talk and tell you when to turn? Or do you just kidnap the clerk at the office and make them read to you as you drive? There is NO subtitute for a GPS system. I understand some of the old timers do not like new technology but I like anything that will save me time and money. |

Paperless is virtually here. Any of the current estimating programs will run on a pen tablet, State Farm has used the IBM 730T and the Fujitsu Stylistic, running Windows 95 and Pen for Windows 2.0. I have a 730TE and have used it with Simsol to write estimates on site. A PCMICA modem provides the connection to the internet. The printer attachment is wireless. Files can be exported and emailed, slow, Moved to a site on the internet, Driveway.com, and downloaded or printed to a PDF file and emailed. I am experimenting with a wearable computer, the computer is on a belt and the keyboard is on your arm, with a measuring device attached and a video camera. Don't know yet if it is useable in the field, but at some point I will let you know. |

Suggest you review the numerous post that have appeared in the last couple of years dealing with laptops, palm pilots, cellphones, cameras, measuring devices, cameras, various hardware and software discussions. Feel free to do some research on new subject materials, review wired.com, that site usually has some new and interesting articles. ZDNET, Insurance Technologies, other trade publications all contain information that can be shared with us if you don't like the current discussion. Everybody is welcome to contribute. |

High Tech to me isn"t or a holder for my laptop it is something that saves us money makes us more productive gives us a better way to communicate and share information . As I said before in earlier post we need a way to do our job paperless and without the aid of the us postal system to communicate that is what I consider high tech not duct tape and cardboard to hold my laptop in place. |

I never print a map since I have been using the Delorme system (for 2 years). I get in my vehicle input the address, it puts a little house on the map and then I take the route which will better suit me. I have used this in a small town or in a 600 mile run and I can say that I save between 1 and 2 hours per day. I have the Jotto desk and find it invaluable. When I first used Delorme, I sat my computor on the seat and I had a sore neck by the time the day was over. Yes, GPS, Delorme and Jotto desk go everywhere I do. |

What ever happened to AAA and their free maps. I spend 10 minutes with a good map can get a few directions from the PH. I watch others spend hours entering directions and printing color documents, programing GPS systems etc. I wonder who is wise. |

Congratulations on the FIRST photo publishing effort to the Forum. No one cares that it took that many attempts, you certainly are persistant. Now we need a list of materials, the assembly diagrams, and estimated cost in labor and materials. Maybe I'll just buy a Jotto, they are made in AR. |

I don't use a Jotto desk, but I do use a computer holder I made out of a boat seat swivel, some plastic and a 1 X 4. It sits in the seat and holds my laptop. If you are interested email me and I will send you a photo. It is cheap and it works. |

He (or she) who goes out of the driveway without GPS, is loosing valuable time looking for the insured. Delorem is the best I have seen, with a laptop and the jotto desk. I use it with a Toshiba 233mhz laptop that used to be my main computer. Amazing how fast things are moving. It is not yet two years old yet.....sheeesh |

I thought we needed a new thread where adjusters could share new products and technology which they have discovered as well perhaps as an explanation of how they are using it. I found this nifty little pocket scanner which fits in your pocket the other day and information can be obtained from the product website at http://www.pocketreader.com It seems like the perfect tool to carry with me on claims where I want to copy all or a portion of an insured's estimate or some paid invoice they may have. I can see other uses as well. It stores up to 40,000 characters, reads 5 languages, downloads through a serial cable to your PC and the cost is $99.00. Best of all, it is just slightly larger than a large ink pen. If you have come across some nifty new gadget or technology, please share it here with all of us. |
