Al
Have you checked the Toshiba web site. There was recently a class action settlement and it includes cash rebates, coupons and other items depending on when the laptop was purchased. Its worth checking out as the amount of the refund I qualify for is about half way to a new one. It won't help with your current situation but might be a way to recover some of your costs.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite 335CDS a year prior to this last November from Best Buy. The salesman wanted to sell us the extended warranty. My wife asked if accidents such dropping, stepping on, or spilling on wood be covered. The salesman said it would be. The sales receipt was stuck in an envelope and off we went. After working the ice damming in Detroit, on the way back, I had the computer hooked up to my Delorme GPS receiver and a bump in the road sent my cup of coffee onto my computer. Best Buy showed me in the envelope which I had not opened that all accidents were not covered. While in Detroit, my modem was also broken. I sent the computer in. I paid for the new keyboard which was the only thing damaged, but they wanted $35.00 for the new modem. I was told that the spill voided my warranty. Later, a light tap against my dresser eliminated my using the monitor. Since the warranty was no good, I took it to a laptop shop. Needs a new motherboard for $1000 plus. So I bought a new monitor to use with it. Thereafter, I decided to check with Toshiba to see if I could get a diagram of the motherboard so the laptop shop could findout whether a module needed to be replaced. I was told when I took it to the Laptop shop, my Toshiba warranty was voided. The extended warranty being voided had not voided the Toshiba warranty. I hope this message will be of use to someone.

My laptop is scheduled on my homeowners policy by endorsement. It is listed as business personal property with all risk coverage. The premium is somewhere around $35.00 per year. Check with your agent to see what is available. I also have my camera equipment scheduled as well...

While mentioning brands, I have a Quantex laptop. While on assignment in Nebraska last summer, I totaled my beloved Toyota. In addition, my Quantex (inside its padded case) took a beating inside my beloved........ My Quantex, well..... she kept on ticking with a small hitch in her giddup. Well I sent it in to my Quantex repairshop. Within 7 days she was fixed. In fact, my extended coverage insurance should not have been primary, but there was never a chage to me or my insurance carrier. My beloved Quantex is a keeper. (You must talk highly of your gear, lest they hear you complaining).

Laptops are tools and I use them extensively. I use email, the net, estimating, word processing, mapping w/gps, database and spreadsheet functions, most of the year my laptop is in use 10+ hours a day. I wear them out in 18 months at the most. The Winbook I dropped has a sticky key and sometimes the scene went nuts. In addition in 18 months the technology and software changes. In the 18 months I had the Winbook I dropped we went from Win95 almost to Win2000 and my estimating changed from Simsol DOS to DDS 4.05 w/digital photos. The biggest problem with the Winbook was hard disk capacity. Harddrives in the 4 gig size range just aren't adequate any more. 3 times that or a hard drive in the 12 gig range would be best.

Anyway I am amazed that the Winbook I dropped is still useable. The screen didn't crack, the case popped open and the read write head hit the platter on the harddrive. Lots of bad clusters.

I will replace the harddrive and glue the case and use the Winbook as a back up to the Compaq.

In the future I will be more likely to back up my data. The worst part of this is that I lost that part of my personal data base accumulated during Floyd and Irene.

Dave is correct about insurance being available, but I usually don't buy much insurance, especially on low and medium ticket, non durable items.

Laptop insurance against accidental damage (i.e. Dropping one on it's head) is available from several sources.

My one year guarantee on a Toshiba 780 Tecra runs out next month. Only problem was a dead battery, (which they replaced , NO charge).

Bought a 2 year extended warantee for 220.00, (price of the battery). Not a bad deal.

These tools of the trade need as much insurance as our cars/trucks and homes.
We do need to support our industry, with contributions.

Chuck,

Is it safe to say your puter was not one of the highly rated "torture tested" laptops? :-(

I knew it would happen, finally I dropped a laptop. Yes sir dropped it on its head on the tile in the family room.

Some advice, don't let Win98 run Scandisk or Surface Scan. Go in thru DOS to recover those files that are not backed up.

Jesse, at DDS, assisted me.
