At the risk of being laughed at, I have an agreement with the local franchise of yellow cab. The last slow period I walked in, said, "Hey, Bob, you got a yellow car for me to drive?" And thirty seconds later I was a cab driver. It's nice to have a sideline where the most difficult decision to be made is how to get from point A to point B. On the other hand, I'm glad I have not had to fall back on that means of making a living much since I went independent. The challenge of a CAT is a more excellent adventure (And much more profitable). Just returned from a small windstorm in Rochester, NY and anxiously watching Dennis. |

I would like to try an experiment. Let us begin with a topic of the first person to respond to this new conversation. The rules for this experiment are simple. First: The topic must be related to insurance adjusting by catastrophe adjusters. Secondly: All replies will not contain any profanity, name calling, corrections of spelling or grammar will not be pointed out & absolutely no getting into any one's personal life. Third: You may use a Pen Name or your Real Name (no comments concerning posting by to be referred to). The purpose of this experiment is to see how long we, as professional adjusters, can act civilized & professional while discussing our profession. |

Fine idea. Here is the topic, and IMHO , it is the appropriate time to engage in a meaningful dissusion. "What does anyone do to support themselves in a very slow cat year, such as 1997" |

I prayed for 1998 to soon get here and look what happened.....remember Montreal 1998? Sometimes a fellow needs to be careful what he prays for, he just might get it. |

During the slow time of 1997 I did wood roof repairs in the Kansas City area. Mainly provided a service to homeowners trying to sell their homes. Have a significant realtor network with as much opportunity as desired. Try not to go back to it much but it does satisfy my artistic longing :-). In addition, I spend alot of time networking on the internet (mainly here but other sites also). What I have been able to accomplish is aligning myself with top notch adjusters many found right here. |

In addition to working claims, I also perform property inspections (e.g., asset, code and risk) and I provide consultant services to a mid-size law firm. There is also a general contractor I assist in preparing bid packages for the commercial market. I find these supplements to not only be an excellent secondary income, they also aid in keeping me sharp in my chosen profession. |

There is usually some need in the large markets (metro areas) for people to do underwriting surveys and audits. The audits are usually workers comp and general liability which are based on payroll and sales respectively so if you have accounting skills or are comfortable with business interuption claims the skills are transferable. Surveys are building and contents inspections with exposure being the issue. The only problem is that this is not usually high dollar work with volume being the key. But it is a related area and provides new contacts within the insurance companies. |

I noted earlier, in another post, and got trashed for it, I might add, that I work as a temporary and a cat adjuster on local storms while waiting for the "big one." I have been busy this year and have been able to pay the bills. I have a friend, another adjuster, that has a small building inspection firm, two others work as contract programers. I suggest that any adjuster contact the local independent firms for overflow work and local cats. |

As an independent contractor, I do freelance legal work involving legal writing and research. In addition, I am a certified instructor and teach several insurance agent pre-licensing courses each year. My insurance claims practice is limited to property (preferably CATS) and agent's errors and omissions. |
