Well, Bob,

Instead of trying to get into the inspection business, seek out and work for the established inspection companies. This leaves you the flexibility to go on the road when the RIGHT time comes. There is a lot to be said for not having to dink around with overhead when the $Big Buck$ can be made trooping. As I alluded earlier, this is a spreading of eggs into several baskets.

Storm trooping has always been a part time oppurtunity, albeit a lucrative one. But, given the vagaries of our brave new world and the reinvention of the wheel by carriers that think square is better than round, it has become far less reliable as a sole source of income. Think of us as the Minutemen of yore, keep on plowing till the call goes out. Just keep your kit ready and the horse shod.

I have heard of these "underwriting inspections" of which you speak, but have encountered nothing but resistance when I have approached existing and new clients. Any suggestions to help get this thing rolling?!?!

Just an FYI for helping to fill the gaps between storms....we have started doing home inventory services for the insured. We like it because we have a much larger customer base, but the downfall is that orimarily we have to target only the high middle class and upper class. Local agents have been willing to promote our services because, usually, we find gaps in their HO coverages.

Awwww, OK, twist my arm, why don't ya. It's called underwriting inspections. It's all quantity and very little quality. Front and rear photos of the Risk, a few check the box questions, and you're off to the next one. Average about 40 houses per day with the Insured being home about 1 out of every dozen houses on a typical day, more if in an area of retired folks.

Basically, it's just me and the dogs out there, just flitting around town in my old sportscar. Clean living, pure thoughts and average $275/day after expenses. And, if a storm does hit, I control whether or not to go, not the emptiness of the bank account. Like I said, we are the ones that should control our lives, NOT the weather, carriers or vendors.

...All of which behooves us to have some other means of recharging the bank account. Here's a little secret of mine. Shhhh!, don't tell anyone but I landed a flexible, long term deal where I'm making 1/2 per month that the mold boys are making, working out of the house with NO brain strain, and all done for the day by 6:00PM. All that and exercise too, having lost 5 lbs and dropping the blood pressure from 140/94 to 132/90 in the past two months.

Folks, I'm having fun. You can't imagine the thrill of NOT having to deal with the ill-mannered arrogance of the Insureds, the carrier staff, and the vendor supervisors. And get this, it still involves the insurance industry.

My point is that we all need to strive to control our own destiny by not being entirely dependent on the vagaries of storms and the varying whims of the carriers and vendors. As small businessmen, we have the capacity for quickly morphing to suit the winds of change. So let's get over the pity party and the damning of those who truly need to be damned. Always remember the lesson of Picketts Charge at Gettysburg, iffen ya caint go up the middle, go on round the flank!

We don't. Not until there is a major event and then they'll be courting us again. We've been down this road before and will be again. Just be ready when the call comes.

I live in the great state of CA. I just spoke to one of my contractor buddies, he is on the preffered list for a carrier. He goes out and sends digital photos to the company and he has a basic fill in the blanks estimating form to fill out. It is all done on the Insurance Company server - he just gets a password. It is going on for water claims right now.

They are basically working out the estimates on line instead of them being bounced all over the place.

Looks like adjusting software as we know it is going to change.

They have been doing it with cars here for a while. They have web cams set up in the shops and they send info back and forth to the company. The body shops love it. The guy I talked to says the Farmers guy comes out about 2 times a month to keep things straight. They also send digital photos back and forth.

A new mouse trap for property is arriving.

Where does the independent adjuster fit in?
