Lucy,
There are many different factors involved in the learning process for cat adjusting. One example is that each Insurance carrier has their own stipulations and requirements. State Farm has been requiring the use of the Xactimate estimating system, while Allstate is requiring that you use DDS. It is a good idea to learn as much as you can, wherever you can. . .I recommend for newbies to go to the local hardware store and study; siding, roofing, drywall, insulation, etc. See what each product is, and pick up some names. They also offer free introductory classes and videos on most types of homeowners repairs. Then go to the local home construction sites in your area. Watch the roofs being installed. Observe the elements of framing, plumbing, foundation, electrical, etc. You will have a much better appreciation for the damage you must estimate. This education is FREE!
I offer a seminar about 3 times a year to teach the newbie what to do when they get to the cat site. It is not easy, especially if you are lost in confusion! There are a lot of things that you are presumed to know!
By the way, Xactimate 99, and DDS estimating programs are available for $99 each from their respective companies. You can study them during the slow periods. Hope this helps! See ya out there!

Is it worthwhile to take correspondence courses such as those that are offered by the American Educational Institute? Do independent adjusting firms care at all about the certifications obtained by these classes? Also, with there being so many adjusting firms out there how do you know what companies to avoid? Are there any companies that I should not bother to send my resume to? How can I find out which companies have bad reputations? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
