Not really news to us but....

From the canadianunderwriter.ca artile;

"December's nonfarm payroll report released by The Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a 6.9% decrease in claims adjusting jobs in the U.S., capping a 2006 fourth quarter that saw a 12.6% decline in all such positions.
Experts at A.M. Best attribute the dramatic drop to the lack of catastrophic hurricanes throughout 2006, and to the fact that claims for the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons have, for the most part, been resolved."

The use of CSR to resolve claims might be economically viable in the minds of the bean counters that now run claims departments. It the same mindset that is now costing companies like State Farm untold millions of dollars more now than when the claims could have been properly resolved. The industry's lack of qualified claims personnel leads to this type of situation. Adjusters with a three day course making recommendations to a former underwriter who got promoted to the claims department really doesn't make a sound decision making process.

About a month ago, there was an add in the Classified Ad for the Houston Chronicle for a staff automobile adjuster to negotiate and settle auto property damage and personal injury claims. Duties included negoitating settlements with plaintiff attorneys. Want to know what the qualifications were? Bilingual abilities were a plus but not a requirement. All they really demanded was a high school diploma or eqivalent and one year experience in the field. This this occupation has not been cheapened?

I agree - I work for a insurance company who purposely under staffs field adjusters so they can save on expense. During Hurricane Katrina and Rita they got caught with no adjusters. They said the would staff property and not only have they not staffed properly, they have cut back. They will never learn.
