You may be familiar with the Claims Pages--very useful, have tons of documents/forms, lots of jobs posted, etc.

A funny thing about them is they have a list of 511 forbidden words. If you type one of these words in a post, it will come out as X's.

For example, I wrote a post and used the word "dope" at one point meaning "information"--what's the dope? or something like that.

I was surprised to see it reduced to "xxxx". Obviously impeded communication.

I wrote the editor, one Kay, who told me about the 511 forbidden words.

He justified the prohibition, saying that "dope" could be used to call somebody a dope, and it could also be used to refer to drug use.

I will leave it to you to decide whether this site and its editor are on the ball or are out of control puritans.

If you would like to reply to this post, I will use your input in further communications with Kay. Thanks.

    E Brooks

You probably should have called it "the skinny", and not been censored...but would then have had the AAFTP (American Assoc for Thin People) calling you out.

I think even this sight uses some censorship. In the chatroom, when talking about a restaurant in Mobile, Al. my post was not allowed. I thought it was silly at the time, but I understand that one person using inappropriate language can ruin it for everyone else. Any one who visits the weather underground forum can see that some folks need to be censored. I think its a small price to have to say "information", or type the restaurant name as "DickRussels". It is frustrating some times, but not a huge problem in the grand scheme.
I know the voices aren't real, but sometimes they're right!

Personally, I think Language that is fitted for public venue, should be censored. I mean there are ways to get a point across, and make little hints of sexuality, or jokes and stuff like that without actually utilizing the "Forbidden" words. As Far As I am Concerned (And FAR FROM BEING PERFECT)!

I mean we all at some point or another, and likely moreso me than most, utilize these forbidden words, And I for ONE WILL Watch whast I say, because it just doesnt sound good....... And realizing it, is a atart and a step in the right direction!

I mean think About it It does sound very Unprofessional, SO I think The Forbidden words area good thing! Just my opinion : )

    Mr Brooks:

It seems like the censorship on this site might be a little behind, so would you please make us abreast of the 511 forbidden words, so that we can have half a chance of not offending anyone?  I don't know butt that few on this site that can spell 511 friggin words...oops, is that one of them again?  George Carlin only came up with seven!!  I probably used 5 right here if anyone wanted to take them out of context.

It would be at least entertaining to see the list. But I haven't seen it--as far as I know they just pop up one at a time when you inadvertently use the forbidden word and you get a string of "x's" instead of the word.

For example, I don't know if the word "screw" is on the list. If it were, that could work a real impediment to communication since no one would be able to fully discuss mechanical topics involving screws. The way out would I suppose be to do a work-around such as "inclined plane thing in a circle that penetrates."

In reality I have used such solutions as (in this example) "sc*ew". The authors or their program are/is not clever enough to foil these tactics.

I have let Mr. McKay of the ClaimsPages know what I think about his list, and I don't think he wants to hear any more from me about it.

I think part of McKay's reluctance to join in the fun of ridiculing his list is that he and some others sat around a table and created it. If the list is any indication, this was/is a pretty buttoned-down group.

So the list is a glimpse into the thoughts of the persons who control the site.

The ClaimsPages site has a direct contact e mail feature to contact McKay. Maybe he would give you the list? Then you could compare it to the list on this site. Which I assume there is?

As an "Admin" on another site, I can tell that part of the set-up is an option to have certain words "flagged" as 'forbidden'. Those are purely at the discretion of the Admin and, like EBrooks mentions, may provide a glimpse into the the thoughts of the person controlling the site or maybe just a sign of tact or respect for potential visitors.

I have often wondered if a more appropriate censorship should be of people who claim to be 'movers and shakers' in this industry yet seem to have a problem writing a grammatically correct sentence. (Or THEY insert CapitaliZations RANdomly tHroughOUt thIER SENtence StrUcture.) They often produce more harm for our industry than someone who lets a little 'color' slip into their posts.

Just think about censorship. Really think about it.

Just don't say anything about it.

    Kevin,

At the risk of having all of my posts scrutinized for the many typos I can whack out on a keyboard, I could not let this one get away. I merely point this out, because I agree with you on the grammar thing. Since I know that you are one who likes to use and read correct grammar, I should point out that you have a plural pronoun referring to a singular person.  This is as bad as ending a sentence with "at".

I published a forum at http://adjustersonly.net/phpBB2/index.php in response to complaints like this one here. I had heard from numerous people who did not like having theirs posts edited or censored. I made it known to a list of adjusters that this forum is for anyone who wants to post whatever he wants and it will remain unmoderated with the exception of those who merely post links to promote their affiliate site or porn sites. I believe that people have the right to look as intelligent or stupid as they desire. Most regular readers of any forum will soon learn who is contributing something useful and who is not. I also believe that we worry too much about "hurting someone's feelings" or "offending others".

I don't,  however, think that most people, even those who complain about being censored are willing to do anything about it. Most people are like sheep and follow where they are lead. All of the things that have been posted on this site could have been posted on that site without censorship. I don't think that I could even come up with a list of 511 words to censor. But even though this knowledge has been available to the 48 registered users there, nothing has been sad for a long time on any of the threads. Some people make comments about how nobody says anything, because there isn't any stimulating topics there. I have made it very clear that we will create any category on request and topics are created by the members. So, any complaint here about censorship should be considered whining by the peanut gallery. This only referres to those who actually new of the fourm over there and is not directed at anyone who knew nothing about the other forum where the term moderator is moderated.

I personally like the moderated ones. I know it is somewhat censorship but it seems many people need to be censored to some extent. I've seen other boards that are not cat related that allow curse words etc and to be honest I get tired of reading constant cursing.

I'm not saying I'm an angel. I use bad words myself, just not on a board where we should be showing our professionalism.

While "dope" isn't really a bad word, would you want a future employer to read that in one of your posts? He may think you can not speak proper English and decide not to hire you for a job or contract.

In a way I think it's sad that adults have to be moderated but I've seen it too many times when they aren't and it turns into pure smut.

Some sites get very agressive at this. I have spent a lot of time at www.rv.net and the line is fine there. Great site but many enforced rules. Free for alls are of little if any value.

    RV'ers are like that.

They require a lot of moderation.

    I should know ...................... I are one.
