I am working independent adjuster for one of the large firms. For years I have received a 1099 and w2. 2011 my firm has given out straight W2 and not checked statutory employee box.  I have always taken my deductions on schedule C as I am an IA.  I have called friend who work for other large firm and they also received W2.

To other IA's who are W2'ed but are truly independent are you filing under Schedule C or Schedule A and what is the reasoning your tax professional has given you?

Thank you for your help the difference will be substantial on my return.

Good question. I am looking forward to reading some answers on this as I was quite surprised to recently receive w2 paperwork in my new hire packet with a large firm. I have been an independent contractor for years and thought "independent adjuster" meant exactly that. Was shocked to see that I would be an actual employee rather than a contractor. How do you write off deductions if employed? And with the very nature of on again/off again assignments, how can they make everyone employees? I would have thought their lives would be much simpler making everyone contractors. Weird.
