While Leland is eating yogurt, I will call either an architect or an engineer who would be an autocad expert to give me the size of the roof. I would not want to be the source of these measurements. While it is a good exercise to think this through, the point is that a project of this magnitude is also a high risk project. Shift liability to the appropriate experts for something like this. Having a good baseline third party measurement completed on the front end will also help keep roofing bids to be comparable on an apples to apples basis. I would not trust a roofing company to measure a roof like this.

While looking up supporting information for various aspects brought up by this thread, I came across some photos from the contractor who ended up investigating the Superdome roof damage.

http://www.thorntontomasetti.com/pr...estigation

Some side views show a slope of nearly 8/12 where the hole is being worked on. Elsewhere, I was able to visually measure the lowest portion of the dome to be just under 12/12.

Hard to believe that the Teflon roof on the Metrodome collapsed from the weight of snow .......................................

Who's gonna climb up there and measure that one?  i noticed when they showed the damaged cover up close it looked shredded sorta like it had flapped in the wind or it was getting rotten . i am guessing they will repair the bad spots only .So it would be a partial repair. The state of Minnesota said they had to figure out how to handle a 6 billion dollar deficit before they could do anything on the dome.

Minnesota probably has a self insured program of some sort, excess over a large Self Insured Retention. My guess is that their SIR is in the neighborhood of 50 Mil USD.

From the video shown on the internet the damage seems to be wide spread and one of the news people used the word "inflated" in describing what he called a Teflon roof. An inflated Teflon roof is something that I would like the opportunity to inspect. Also, the video appeared to show water cascading out of the ceiling. Maybe the snow melted and pooled somehow.

Now I do NOT know exactly what these roofs are made of, but I grew up around the Pontiac Silverdome and the material is actually soft and the roof staying up has a lot to do with updrafted air through the HVAC system or something similar. They also have some type of flexible coils filled with superheated water to melt any snow or ice buildup and then directed away from the center mass. I am thinking the snow just came on too fast and as the coils melted the snow/ice, the water pooled and well the video takes it from there. Obviously this is a completely different roof system than that of the Superdome(rigid) in New Orleans

A good fact to know is that water is heavy,

Cubic foot 62.42796

"The weight of snow varies greatly. Light fluffy snow may only weigh about seven pounds per cubic foot. More average snow may weigh 15 pounds per cubic foot and drifted compacted snow may weigh 20 pounds or more..."

Once the snow melted and the melt started to pool the situation changed rapidly.

It's held up by air pressure 10 acres of Teflon coated fiberglass 1/32" thick. It is 195 feet from the highest point of the interior ceiling to the playing field. It is the ONLY inflatable roof system left out of 28 other domed stadiums.

I just read where the commisioner said it sustained more damage than first anticipated. Now I bet they will look at other options. That cover has got to cost

a bundle.

They stopped clearing the snow with they normal hot water mixture late at night to let employees go home. I'll bet paying overtime was part of that decision. The plan was to return in the morning to continue the snow clearing process. When they returned, the roof had collapsed.

They have bigger problems than the top of the stadium, the team owner wants a new stadium, the city won't commit, L/A Ca and a couple of other cities ares courting them to come there. Anybody want to buy a stadium with a bad top on it?
