My credit was perfect until 2009, Then I was out of work for a while, and my credit record tanked bad.  I was 60,90, even 180 days late reported for a long time (years) before I caught up. Never defaulted on my mortgage or car loans but the payment history is bad until about 2 years ago. Two collection accounts I was unaware of are on my credit report.  They did not have my contact information so I was never notified.   When I found out and contacted me, they had offered a 50% payment settlement offer.  I declined but paid 100% of what I owed.  Now my negative record shows two small credit cards that were closed and sold as a charge off to collection companies.  Only one collection company is on my record.  I paid the collection companies in full, will this type of negative record disqualify me from being an adjuster?  I already have a TX License, but Pilot's website said those with record of financial irresponsibility need not apply.

I think you've explained your responsibility. Get it down on paper with specifics and submit it to Pilot or whoever. They are always looking for "stand up" people.

I admire your lack of arrogance in this matter and being forthright. Remember this:

Character is what we think of ourselves.
    Reputation is what others think.

Larry, I must agree with everything sans a tiny little thing.

Character is defined by ,"what you do when nobody is looking".

    JWhitney,

The thing about credit worthiness shows your tendency towards following through with a promise. Whether that is following through on a promise toward a car note, a mortgage, it has been proven (more often than not) that those who have a good credit history will follow through on promises made toward insured's / team leads / claims managers.

Now with that being said, I have NEVER been asked to provide a credit report or asked for permission to run my bureau (something they must do) However I have helped many rookie adjusters get their start and have had a few that basically would have a hard time financing a hot dog and at least a dozen folks who had to file for bankruptcy protection. This economy has hit many folks extremely hard. I would further say that the industry  has been especially hard on CAT adjusters finances from between 2006 through 2010. Not from an economic standpoint as for the most part , our business CAN be recession proof. But from a lack of major events. When nothing is going on, whether 20 years or 20 minutes of experience nobody in the CAT IA world is working much. The last few years have been very good for the rookie sub-set and I would venture to say that remains the prognosis for a few years to come.

I do NOT think you will have too much of an issue with your bureau disqualifying you from any employment. Even so, if a vendor does require a copy of your bureau, I truly believe that the explanation you have provided us will be more than sufficient for any potential employer

I work for Pilot and that has never been an issue. All they are looking for is someone who can do the job when you are called out on a storm. You have to hang in there and do not give up, because when you get out there you don't know what you don't know. Don't be afraid to ask for HELP, they will help you they want you to succeed. They are a great company to work for in my opinion.
