Assuming you are not working claims; get the book, practice estimating some fake losses on your house, and then take an online Xactimate course. After that, you will be ready for at least the Level 1 Certification.
I have a hunch that Robby here is going to bash the Certification, but I know too many vendors who value the certification. That simple fact alone gives it validity. Good luck.

Hi Jud, nah, I am not going to bash an XM8 certification. XM8 certs are but a few certifications I would wholeheartedly recommend for our rookie brethren and industry veterans alike.
XM8 level 1/2/3 knowledge is far more important that a XM8 level 1/2/3 certification. Nevertheless, to have a XM8 level 3 certification on their resume WILL indeed set them apart from the masses
