The best macros you can have are the ones you create yourself. That way you know what they contain and what the names mean, such as "wet_pop_ceil" which means wet popcorn ceiling. I bought the 100 macro CD off of here, 39.95 I think, and I never used them.

If you cannot  create your own macros, do you know enough to create an estimate or just enough to cut and paste some elses work. I am reviewing a lot of contractors estimates, the ones who use a lot of macros, tend to leave in or leave out items.

Well macros does cut down on time. You can add and delete items faster and you do not have to bring them up.

No one would claim that marcos are not a help, but if you cannot build your own do you really have a clue how to estimate? The fact you did not understand my comment speaks volumes.

You are getting advise from two adjusters that have closed thousands of loss over many years. Learn from them.I have never been able to delete any junk that was in a estimate fast. It always seemed to take me twice as long to make sure it would print out the correct estimate.

I know this is a very old post, but I just had to add in.

Sharing Macros can be a bad idea, BUT it also can help. Learning from others that have been through this is a great tool. Why not see how others put their macros together, or start with a shared macro and change it to one that works for you.

The assistant coach learns plays from the head coach, so when the assistant coach becomes a head coach, should he not look at his old playbook and improve from there?

I'll help resurrect this dead thread...

It's also educational to look at estimates done by a Public Adjuster to see all the possible things they throw in there. Hmmm.  Why didn't I think to include testing for asbestos, inventorying every item in the house, and pressure washing the driveway?  There's a Florida PA who includes those in every estimate.  Appropriate for some claims, but might just be negotiable items in most cases.

When I starting doing Hurricane Irma claims for Tile roofs in Florida, I asked for a macro because I knew shingle roof construction but not tile roofs.  I was pretty much told that if I didn't know how to write a macro, that I didn't know what I was doing.  Well, that's why I asked.

Long story, short: I wrote about a dozen tile roof estimates (many were kicked back) and spoke to a half-dozen roofers about building techniques and building codes before I got the basics of tile roofs.

Would I have saved getting those files kicked back if I had a macro?  Or would I have taken longer to learn the construction techniques?  Clearly the old-timers have their opinion, but I can understand your point about seeing the playbook and learning their tricks.
