Greetings my name is Danny Cave and I have been an adjuster for over 16yrs.  I recently made the switch to general contractor for monetary reasons and wanting to stay home around my kiddos.

Since I was an adjuster for so long I already know my answer to this question but I wanted to post it to the forum and ask for feedback from all the adjusters.

When it comes to General Contractors.  What attracts an adjuster the most to one and makes them want to call them back over and over again for assistance on their claims.  Obviously trust worthy, honesty, integrity and things like that go without being said, but what else as adjusters do we need from a GC for our claims to run smoothly and efficiently and close fast so we can get paid.

I look forward to your responses.

I want a GC who will work off of my estimate and back up my estimate when the insured finds another contractor who over inflates thier estimate because it is an insurance claim.

All depends on the accuracy of your estimate.

Well obviously if I miss something or did not consider something then I would expect the GC to come back and tell me we need a supplement. But when I go to a site and write 100 estimates and have one person come back way higher than mine, I look for a GC who has worked off of my estimate regularly and will back me up. I could name 5 in Miichigan, 2 in Arkansas, 3 in Oklahoma right now that have done numerous claims from my estimate without a need for supplement.

If my estimate is not acurate then I should not be in this business. My job is to adjust the claim per my companies best practices not remodel the insured's house per a GC's estimate.

Great answers. Does the use of Xactimate attract you guys over someone that does maybe integra or some xcel based program.

I think xmate has the poorest paper print out in the industry. I would rather read any other estimate if I was looking at estimates all day long and trying to "figure" them out.

"If my estimate is not acurate then I should not be in this business."

There would be a few dozen adjusters out of work if this were true

' My job is to adjust the claim per my companies best practices not remodel the insured's house per a GC's estimate."

Actually acceptable construction standards should be the practice that both you and the GC base estimates.

I meet the contractor I use the most on the job, we agree on the scope and I write an Xactimate estimate. The contractor and I go over the estimate, line by line on site, and it develops as his bid. Then the contractor sticks with the price for the scoped and priced line items. Occasionally there are change orders, but very seldom.
