I have had the same experience with Xactimate as Don states he has had with MSB. I guess it's just what you get to use to. I find it easy to transfer files to a disk or CD and do it all the time with Xactimate. Since I normally only carry one PC with me when I travel I do not miss the ability to place it on more than one system. The laptop with Xactimate 2002 on it is running Windows 2000 and I have not had any problems.

I use MSB/DDS and love it. The problem I have when using both laptop and desktop and sharing the files is that you can't do updates to a file on one and then download just the updates done to the other computer. If updates are done on each computer to the same file, then transfered from one computer to the other, you will lose the updates done to the computer it was transfered to. I talked to DDS a little over a year ago on this issue and there was no way around it at the time. Does anyone know if that has changed since?

Here are a few tidbits of info on installation of Xact 2002 with Win XP:

I have two desktops at my home office with the standard version of XP. I had Xact 2001 running on both, with Xact 5.9 also on the newer machine(home built). I loaded Xact 2002 over the existing install on the older machine (466 Celeron with 256 MB Ram and 40 gig hard drive)and it installed OK. It took a while, but it worked fine for the last few months.

So, I figured I would load it onto the new machine - a 1.4GHz AMD Thunderbird chip, 40 gig Hd and 512 MB ram). No go...I tried three installs with different error messages each time. (I use Roxio's GoBack to restore the previous settings - I recommend this software very highly)

So, I unload Xact 2001 and reboot. I try to install normally by connecting over Xactnet. It shuts me down each time, so I install without the internet connect. That was the charm. After the completed installation, I signed on to Xactnet and everything is good, it updated my time latch and I was good to go. I restored my settings...all except for company headers which supposedly converted but showed up as an empty list. No biggee. Company headers are easy.

Next project - converting a 5.9 estimate...no option for copying 5.x estimate listed on the smartlist drop down option menu. The help file says it's there...but it's not! Tried to log onto Xactware's site, but couldn't. GRRR.

Too bad we have to waste so much time with stuff that is what I would consider an "unallocated expense" to us.

I hope that these few installation tips might save someone else a little time.

Xactimate midterm update disks

FYI, I had an e-mail yesterday from Xactimate testing saying the 2002 midterm bug fix (for AMFAM at least) should be out in a few days. It is supposed to fix the problem with the Activity Notes which limited the amount of information you could type (crashed again and again....). They argued with me that they had tested it with 5 pages of W's and it worked just fine -- so I faxed them a real activity notes section that crashed on me and they could not get as much info into the system as I had been able to (<2 pages)!! so they agreed it needed to be taken care of (that was back in March).

Another bug where the contact date will not save is not going to be fixed until the 2003 version comes out next year.

I did not hear if they would be fixing the problem that Sketch misfigures roof squares (let alone it's impossible to easily draw many of the roofs we go on). Sketch for 2002 is totally useless for the majority of our claim situations (roofs) but it does work well for interior dimensions (if you're exact to the inch).

Some day we'll get their program up to snuff if we keep complaining and giving them examples in writing. However, it will be a lengthy process because Xactimate is a propriatary operating system (not MS) small changes require extensive program re-writes. I don't see any hope in the long term even that they will address policy issues like IntegriClaim does because Xactimate's development comes from the contractor side, where Integri's came from the Insurance company side. Integri built the system up from the policy and Xactimate has to build back to the policy.

My biggest gripe with Xactimate lies in this policy problem. The insured does not receive the quality of policy information on the claim summary like Integri provides. It also does not handle excess over limits, so the fix is to add a credit line item and try to explain why you just took money away from the insured !! This policy issue does cause more problems for agents, company call centers, and policy retention but it has never been factored into the insurer's cost analysis because it is so hidden. Poor communication of policy coverage on claim summaries creates a customer relations problem which is unnecessary in the claims process.

Actually, I called Xactimate and they will let you install the program on up to 3 computers. I have it on my laptop and on my desktop back at the office. I networked them together and I can swap files from onr to the other.

I just rec'd my Xactimate 2002 upgrade from 2001 and installed. Simple enough (WIN/ME).

Wow, the whole thing looks way different than what I am accustomed to (2000 & 2001). I like the various reports (SOL, activity log, photo etc.) , but it looks like I am going to have to learn Xactimate all over again.

Good thing I am enrolled for the intermediate and advanced Xactimate courses at the Eberls' Conference in San Antonio. Am I ok with that or do any of you believe I will be lost after not attending the beginners class (it is probably full by now).

There is a feature click in "View" that can allow X2002 to be similar in appearance like the old version.......I've always wondered why all Insurance companies/Vendors don't utilize the same estimating program such as Xactimate(including their price database)rather than asking Xactimate to write a program for the company.....to avoid Industry inconstancies.....It sure would be nice for the IA's.

To all of you experienced Xactimate users--do you use the mouse or keyboard and keyboard shortcuts primarily for Xactimate and Sketch. Which is faster? It seems like you can click forever... I just sent the loss locations from 2002 to DeLorme Street Atlas and that was pretty neat. Are there any other time savers or shortcuts you have used that really speed up the process? Thx.

And lets ask another question ......... what is up with Xactimate increasing their monthly fees to $115.00/mth per quarter where as it used to be $85/mth with the option of suspension while not in progress.......I also heard that Xactimate past program purchasers were being forced by Xactimate to become renters of thier previously purchased program..........
