Kenneth Feinberg, the independent paymaster chosen by President Barack Obama to administer damage claims from the Gulf oil spill, will drop the contractor that BP has been using to manage the claims process and hire two new companies to replace it. Feinberg is expected to take over the claims system from BP in mid-August. He will replace BP’s primary contractor for claims, ESIS Inc., with two other firms when he assumes control of the process, Feinberg’s spokeswoman Amy Weiss said.

Dam fails in eastern Iowa, causing massive flooding

(CNN) -- A dam on an eastern Iowa lake suffered a "catastrophic" failure Saturday, sending a massive amount of water into nearby communities and forcing residents to flee, officials said.
The Lake Delhi dam, about 45 miles north of Cedar Rapids, failed as a result of "massive rain -- a very unusually high amount this season," according to Jim Flansburg, communications director for Gov. Chet Culver.
Culver told CNN that nearly 10 inches of rain had recently fallen in a 12-hour period in the area and was "too much water for the dam to hold."
The roads on either side of the dam -- which were part of the dam's containment measures -- apparently gave out as a result of the rainfall, Flansburg told CNN.

According to Brad Daws, a Bozeman agent, there have been at least 5,000 automobile claims received from State Farm customers. He estimated that State Farm maintains about 30 percent of the auto insurance market in the Gallatin Valley. "They're still coming in," he said, referring to claims related to the June 30 storm, which dropped golf-ball sized hail on vehicles and broke windows in and around Bozeman. "It's kind of a moving target." Source: The Bozeman Daily Chronicle

Combined with agents already in town, Farmers had between 70 and 80 people processing claims or doing inspections. At the Wal-Mart in the Heights, Farmers had one of its two Customer Care Vehicles processing claims. The full-length bus has work stations for 12 adjusters, videoconferencing capabilities, a check printer and satellite phone and Internet connections. Source: billingsgazette.com

BP Claims

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill could be big business for one Atlanta company, and possibly hurt others. The winner could be Crawford & Co., the world’s largest independent provider of claims management services. On June 16, BP Plc and the White House agreed to establish a $20 billion independently administered fund to pay claims from the Gulf oil spill. “In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must, and will, be administered by an independent third party,” President Barack Obama said in his June 15 national address. A spokeswoman for Crawford (NYSE: CRDA) would not say if the company might bid for any management or processing contracts that could come available. And she would neither confirm nor deny BP is a client. BP said June 16 that more details about the establishment and operation of the claims fund and an independent claims facility will be finalized and announced as soon as possible.
